First Place Bird. Carolina's baseball Gamecocks, surprise leaders of the Atlantic Coast Conference, face the for midable task of playing five of their six remaining conference games on the road, including an important series this weekend. Coach Bob Reising's Birds are at N. C. State Friday and North Carolina Saturday. In previous meetings at home, South Carolina edged both N. C. State and North Carolina by 4-3 scores. South Carolina has a 6-2 con ference record and is 14-7 overall following last weekend's home stand sweep of Wake Forest, 8-4, and 1)uke, 3-2, the latter win coin ing on 1ill LaMotte's 380-foot line drive home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Duke was in second place in the conference at the beginning of the week with a 4-3 mark. Clem son and Maryland were tied with 4-4 records, and Virginia had a 3.3 nark. North Carolina was sixth wvith a 2-3 record ,and Wake Forest and N. C. State had 2-4 marks. South Carolina has surged into the fifth for the ACC title despite a team batting average of only .229. The Gamecocks have won chiefly ol the strength of excel lent lefthanded pitching. Seven of the 14 wins have been by a margin of one run and in only four games out of 21 have Gamecock pitchers yielded more than four runs. The staff has pitched four shutouts. Despite the low team hatting average, the Gamecocks now have three regulars hitting above .300. Catcher Dan Scarpa has a .350 average and also leads the club in runs batted in with 12. Second baseman Joe Tonelli is hitting .338, and first baseman Ronnie Lamb is hitting .313. Lamb, who missed seven games with a hand injury, returned to the lineup with a double and a single against Wake Forest and two singles against Duke. Tonelli had four hits. and one a <ouble, against Wake Forest and two sin gles against Duke. Scarpa col lected two singles in each ganw. LaMotte, who leads the team in home runs and triples, with two of each, and is second to Scarpa in Rils with 10, is hitting .27,). Tonelli leads in doubles with seven. Kickoff time is 8 P.M., with proceeds from ticket sales going to the Block C Club, the Univer sity's organization of letterman athletes. Coach Marvin Bass planned to practice five days this week, Monday through Friday, with the intra-squad game Friday night being the fifth workout. The Macon, Ga., sophomore who stars as a halfback for Coach Marvin Bass' football Gamecocks in the fall, has been one of three lefthandeo pitchers who have been the mainstays of Coach Bob Reis ing's baseball pitching staff this spring. Bryant has taken his regular turn on the mound despite a February operation to correct an old high school injury in his right wrist. The wrist will be in a cast until late May. Bryant has pitched 391/3 in 11noL:;, including two complete gamies and one shutout, and has a :3-1 record with a 2.52 earned run ildsSpring e Tonight Bass said. "If he continues to block like that, he'll help us a lot." Collins, tallest Gamecock at 6-6, is a 234-pound two-year letterman. Two Gamecock regulars-quar terback Jim Rogers and end Bill Dickens -aggravated injuries in the scrimmage and may be out for the intra-squad game. Rogers pulled a muscle attachment in a knee and Dickens tore ligaments in his right ankle. Quarterback Ted Wingard, re i n j u r e d his already bruished shoulder, but may be ready to go by Friday. The injuries to Rog ers and Wingard and the absence of Mike Fair, who was away with the freshman baseball team, left the Gamecocks with only one able bodied quarterback-rising sopho more Ben Garnto-at the end of Saturday's scrimmage.
