People must want to be in the Peace Corps before it will he effective," stated Mickey Feltus, a recent Peace Corps volunteer. Mr. Feltus, along with two other Peace Corps volunteers have visited the USC campus this past week distributing literature and inform ing Carolina students about the functions of the Peace Corps. According to Mr. Feltus, the purpose of the Peace Corps volun teers is to explain the Peace Corps program. "People don't fully understand the Peace Corps and often they have misleading ideas." The Peace Corps also wishes to encourage more Southerners to participate in the program. Mistaken Ideas One of the most common mis taken impressions about the Peace Corps centers around the educa tional requirements. Contrary to popular belief, a volunteer does not have to have a college degree. "In fact, anyone who has had two years of college may consider himself well qualified for the Peace Corps. There are many volunteers with just high school Publish re Play Hall. April 23 and 24 at 8:00 P.M. Sincerely, The University Players. For nost projects the Peace Corps will each the volunteer to be as pro *icient in a foreign language as is iecessary to satisfactorily perform is job. However, English is spoken in some countries and <nowledge of another language nay not be necessary. A native of Fairhope, Ala., Mr. Feltus served two years in Ethi )pia after volunteering for the Peace Corps in July, 1962. Having taught for one year in A junior high school, the teacher volunteer, resumed his teaching :areer in Ethiopia. The primary >bjective of the Ethiopian project! was to instruct the native chil Iren. Approximately 270 volun Leers taught in Ethiopian secon dary schools and some taught in preparatory colleges. Train Natives The main purpose of the volun Leer teaching was to train native Ethiopian teachers. "The whole idea of this project was to up grade the teaching professions in Ethiopia. The Peace Corps wanted to force people to help them selves," explained the volunteer. Other Activities Other activities performed by the volunteers were in the field of irrigation, sanitation, and home economics. Some of the volunteers in the Ethiopian groups worked in hospitals and orphanages. "Ethiopia was a big adjustment, but not a difficult one. It just exists and just becomes a part of your life. You have to accept it for what it is. You usually end up enjoying it." According to Mr. Feltus, thell living conditions in Ethiopia vary. However, there is adequate hous ing. The natives usually live in mud huts. "Our living conditions were very nice. We lived in old Italian apart ment houses," said Mr. Feltus. Manv Friends While serving in Ethiopia, Mr. Feltus made many friends among the natives. Often the Peace Corps volunteers were the first whites that the Ethiopian children had ever seen. Mr. Feltus explained that when the Peace Corps volunteers first arrived at their Ethiopian desti nation, they met some resentment from the natives. Fmorable Emperor Haile Sellassie, emperor of Ethi opia, is quite favorable to the Peace Corps. He inivited the volun teers to his palace for champagne and guided them on a royal tour of the grounds. The relationship between the natives and the volunteers is de scribed as "quite good," by the Peace Corps volunteer. While Mr. Feltus was teaching in Ethiopia, one of the gifts presented to him by his class was a native shield and spear made by the stu dents. Selassie also gave certificates and gold medals to many of the teachers as tokens of apprecia tion. When Mr. Feltus and two of his co-teachers left Ethiopia to return to the United States, over 2,000 people came down to the train station to see them off. Travel "I visited in Kenya, Tangan yika, Zanzibar, Uganda. Sudan, and Egypt. I also toured all of Europe at no expense except what I made in the Peace Corps," ex rlained Mr. Feltus. Help Other The whole idea of the Peace Corps is to help peopl( to help themselves. according to Mr. Fel tus. The Peace Curps helped in stitute the National Student Serv ;ce in Ethiopia. Under this Serv ice, each college student must serve a year doing work in Ethi opia similar to that of the Peace Corps before getting a degree. The Peace Corps goes into countries only where they are re quested. "The Peace Corps goes in to help, not take over. Each country must guarantee to have native people willing to be trained by the volunteers. "This is two years of life you just can't get anywhere else. It helps you to understand and to appre-iate things of your own country and also of a foreign country," summed up Mr. Feltus.
