With the added support of nos talgic and inebriated alumni, the Roosters hope to land their first victory of the year against Coach Eddie Teague's neighboring Bull dogs. The game promises to be a spirited one with each team fired Dan Reeves up to the hilt. The Citadel let all know of their intentions to beat Carolina earlier in the year. In the late stages of the Rich mond game with The Citadel lead ing by a score of 33-0, students be gan to Aiant in unison, BEAT CAROLINA. The Southern Confer ence Bulldogs want that certain prestige and self-satisfaction of knocking off an Atlantic Coast Conference team. They will also be primed to even take record at 4-4 after losses to Army, West Virginia, William and Mary, and East Carolina and victories over Davidson, Richmond and Furman. The painted walks of the Caro lina Campus, however, may well turn to tainted ones, tainted, that is, with the blood of the visiting Doggie Pups. The birds need this one desperately and what is more, realize it, and are out to respond with a victory. For Coach Marvin Bass' bat tered birds, it will be good to get Use Ourex Bras eam Retur set Mindet home after a solid month on the road against top-flight competi tion. Consecutive losses to Ne braska and Florida, both nation ally ranked and North Carolina and N. C. State have left the Gamecock squad in a crippled state. INJURIES Latest injury has put the little Leprechaum Sonny Dickinson out for the season. The diminutive ace will be missed in the second ary. His loss, however, is offset with the return Lo action of top pass receiver J. R. Wilburn, and center - linebacker Mike Johnson. J. R. is expected to be at top speed again, thus returning versa tile Ronnie Lamb to halfback after a week at Wilburn's split end slot. Johnson's injury, on the other hand, gave junior substi tute Bob Gunnels the chance to play. The 6-1, 200-pounder made the most of and garnered the coaches' award as the top defen sive player, the "Cock of the Walk" against N. C. State. REEVESTISTICS Deacon Dan Reeves, in his best running display since his sopho more year, churned out over a hundred yards on the ground, and had another eighty-five called back by penalties. Reeves' six pass completions raised his career total to an even 2,000 while his 164 yards total offense made it 3,104 as a Gamecock making him the first 3,000 yard football player in South Carolina history. Coach Bass labeled his team's showing as their best since the Duke opener; he singled out Reeves, Gunnels, and John Breeden for particular praise. THE CITADEL Coach Walt Hambrick in his scout report of The Citadel noted the running of fullback Mike Lane possessor of better than four yards average in rushing, and the passing of quarterback John Breedlove who has hit on 33 of 66 tosses for an even 50%. Other standouts include line backer Mel Philips split end Dick ./r 4wc ~Spo aCc CCe clusive "Gamecock" Char h Bul as Home I Citadel Bills, and kicker Bob Anderson. The Bulldogs' lineup is one of sev eral offensive sets employing either a wide or split end, a double wing or a regular straight T back field. The off tackle, ran from an unbalanced line has emerged as the Bulldogs' bread and butter play. Last week television offered many the opportunity to witness a fine overall team effort against N. C. State. It made believers out of many a doubting Thomas. It Pete DiVenere showed the type of ball the Game cocks are capable of playing. And, it may have been a delayed start of Carolina's true potential. At any rate, Saturday after noon, Carolina Stadium will be the place to be! "Cock Of The Walk" Center Bob Gunnels, a 6-1, 200 - pound center - linebacker, was named as last week's "Cock of the Walk," the award I given to the top defensive player in the estimation of the I coaching staff. Gunnels, given a chance to play, by the injury to Mike Johnson, made the most of it. His fine individual effort led a stubborn Gamecock defense. From his linebacker position, Gunnels made a number of tac kles and was credited with sev eral assists. Dan Reeves a gain was chosen as top offensive player. The second semester, then, should find the butterfly USC's strongest event while the breast stroke, with Winter the only regu lar there, might be a cause for concern. Evans could conceivably be called on to help out Winter in that event. In addition, the backstroke could develop into a sore spot dut to the loss of Carter Crewe, knocked out of action in an automlobil[2 accident. Coach Thompson foresees a three-way battle for the ACC team crowny between N. C. State. North Carolina, and Maryland, comment ing, "In the second semester, we will be able to hold our own against all but those big three schools, but the first semester, we'll have to scramble for any thing we can get." USC's first scheduled meet is against peren nial pool powerhouse UNC at Chapel Hill on December 5. The frosh, 1.1 strong, are led by such swimmers as Bill Muller, de scribed by Thompson as "the finest swimmer to ever come to this University." Muller missed making the high school All-Amer ica swimming team only because his coach did not turn in his times.
