Lasting Old Spice Stick D 'Cool By JUNE MEADOWS Staff Writer Are you cool? I mean really cool? Oh, you may wear the standard clothing, talk the standard slang, and take the standard courses, but this still does not mean you're cool. Now, you're bewildered, I'll bet -- just when you, a dyed-in-the-wool collegiate, were beginning to think that you were the epitome of cool ness. Fear not, unfortunate ones. All is not yet lost. I'm about to let you in on my secret, a discovery that will surely raise you to the top of the cool list. You're panting with anticipation, I know, so I'll put an end to your anxiety and save you from being a college failure. Listen closely. Well, in my months of recent survey, I've discovered that those rare and lucky individuals who own an electric toothbrush are really cooler than cool. Oh, I can just hear you now. "Are you kid ding me?" No, I am not kidding you. An electric toothbrush is actually the secret to coolness. Have you ever walked into your community bathroom in the early morning, drugged with sleep, and heard a slight humming noise? Thinking, probably, that it was still a portion of your last night's dream, you started to vigorously scrub your teeth. (By the do-it yourself method.) However, this humn.:ng demands attention, so you looked around (and in the process drip toothpaste down your chin) to look straight S6WA. Herd. Spoken ON CAMPUS In the Gamecock Room one day, a group of students were observed having a contest with a salt shaker. Each student, in his turn, would push the salt shaker in order to see how far down the table it could slide. This activity continued, accompanied by gales of laughter. until someone (a stranger) pulled the adjacent table about two inches away. Result? Four surprised game players and one salt shaker on the floor. One Carolina coed, at least, has already been caught in the sprin kling system when she tried to cross the Horseshoe Monday morn ing. You stood in a trance watching him smile through the toothpaste and hum some lively melody. His hand holding the shiny electric toothbrush barely moves at all, and his nonchalant coolness makes you regard this person with admiration. That's it in a nutshell, friends, and, believe it or not, an electric toothbrush will give you the con fidence you need to be drenched in coolness. And, naturally, it has How To i Without 2 By SUE ADAMS Staff Writer "Shooting the bull" is a term used frequently on college campuses. Because this term is slang, the precise definition is difficult to pinpoint. It could be defined as the process a student uses in answer ing a quiz question that he doesn't know. Of course, this process cannot be used on all quizzes. Specific fact questions, such as fill in the blank and true-false, do not allow the student sufficient range to display: his creative abilities. Another important factor is to remember the ideas and opinions of the professor. The best way to answer the problem question is to write a very general summary of the professor's ideas. If he thinks the student is intelligent enough to hold beliefs similar to his own, the professor will often pass the student with a high mark. If, however, the student remem bers nothing about the course or the professor, his m e t h o d of "shooting the bull" is r a t h e r limited. He may have to resort to name-dropping. This may have no relationship to the question on the quiz, but the professor could be impressed by the student's awareness of such scholarly writers. Another factor is the student's mastery of the English language. Correct grammar and a large vo cabulary are the basic tools of one who frequently practices "shooting the bull." If the professor has a large number of boring, misspelled paragraphs, he may, in relief, give an imaginative but incorrect paper a high grade. One student, or so it's rumored, was pressed for time (he had two days left) concerning the writing of a 1,500-word term paper. His solution was simple enough. He chose, as subject, a historical figure about whom he had general knowledge. Individual facts, foot notes, and references were created, and the semi-fictional work was turned in on time. On quizzes many imaginative answers have been written. Un doubtedly they do brighten the professor's sessions with his red marking pencil. Who wouldn't he amused by a statement of this nature? "The scarlet letter was embroidered in yellow." "Shooting the bull" also com-s in handy on those horrible papers known as lab reports. These offer a particular opportunity for frank ness and candor. For instance, a truly sincere lab report might begin as follows: "After half an hour of complete confusion, I True artistry is ex fashion styling of ever gagement ring. And then, they, too, can be a campus "cooly." uestions Answers finally figured out the dia gram. . . ." However, keep this in mind. Al though some professors are blind enough to pass "bull-shooters," most professors delight in failing them. As one final example of the effectiveness of "shooting the hull," all you have to do is reread this article. Now that you've rcached the end, the truth can be revealed.
