Caroliniana Contains All S. C. Authors By ANN PARKINSON Staff Wuiter Have you had trouble locating that book on South Carolina for a term paper, or do you need a quiet place to study? The South Caro liniana Library is the answer. Located at the lower corner of the horseshoe, the South Caro liniana Library was the first sepa rate college library in the United States. The central portion was completed in 1840 and fire-proof wings added in 1927. The architect of the exterior is unknown, but the contractors bills are on file with no payment for the architect. The reading room was copied from Bulfinch's Li brary of Congress. With 35,000-40,000 volumes, the library has all the works of South Carolina writers. Not only books are in the li brary. Manuscripts, newspapers, maps, and pictures are stored there. The music of South Carolina composers, and music about the state are available. In 1937 a society was formed to collect materials for the library. For those who have not been in there yet, they are encouraged to take just a few minutes and go in and browse around. Even Mrs. Flei.she drops in from time to time . . . t assure herself that everyone i suffering! The ASME is a professional so ciety with chapters in numerous schoals of engineering and uni versities. Officers of the USC chapter are Jake Butts, chairman; Hubert Roberts, vice chairman; Rodney Epting, recoriing secre tary; Brooks Drew, corresponding 3acretary; and Charles McEachern, treasurer. The highlight of the soci activities is the annual Engineer Ball sponsored by the Joint Cou: oil of engineering societies. The promotion of higher aca demic and professional standards is another aim of the ASME. Every Christmas members make toys for local orphans and under do privileged children. This year the con vention will be held in April at the University of Tennessee. Recently Hugh Gillam, a grad uate stud:nt, received a scholar ship from the national Women's Auxiliary to ASME. The USC chapter of ASME con tinues with the tradition of pro moting interest in m e c h a n i c a I engineering as a profession and promoting the standards of this profession.
