+his Was Ihe \4eK that Qs R1CKS b7LD THE DISHONORABLE SYSTEM Honor is missing. Let's quit kidding ourselves about the 3 Honor System at the University of South Carolina. It just doesn't exist any more. In the classroom, self-righteous students are indignantly refusing to sign honor pledges for work which was done under the watchful eye of a hardened professor. The same students walk into another class, one in which the professor steps out for a moment, and they laugh at his pathetic naivete. So Honor is not in the classroom. And if you have become discerning, you can recognize the smirk on one's face when one walks out of a quiz for which he has had the old tests of a professor who gives the tests over again. Where is Honor? Let's take a look in the lovely new girls' dormitory com- t plete with air-conditioning, telephones, and three elevators and two stairways for quick get-aways. The rising number of petty and not at all petty thefts in the new dormitory is enough to let one know that Honor has gone. Surely even the idealists among those in favor of the good name of the University realize that there is no honor among thieves. Meanwhile, instead of constructive action about many issues which are not honorable, which are dishonest, some of which are downright illegal, everyone goes placidly along. Nothing is (lone because "we are on the honor system." Missing: Honor. Has many Aliases: Integrity, Honesty, Truth. Has been around for many great acts of many people for many years. Honor was misused. Honor left. But do you really think anything is accomplished just because you keep Honor around here in name only? Do you really think that we have an honor system when nobody can find Honor? Oh! New student, you have found Honor? Where? Do tell us? "On page fifty-two in the Carolina Community."
