Fraterni Of T GEAN I By Mike King Editor's Note: This story is a bit out of the usual for fra ternity man of the week but since Gean is the new fraternity Man of the Year, it is fitting that he should be honored this week. * The qualifications of Gean Mar in for Inter - Fraternity Council Fraternity Man of the Year are numerous and outstanding. Since pledging Pi Kappa Alpha in the fall of 1961, Gean has been an ex emplary member and a recognized leader. He served as an officer in his pledge class and on various pledge committees. Upon going ac tive at the close of the fall semes ter, he was installed as Publicity Chairman for the chapter and also worked closely with the Rush Chairman in preparing for the 1962 spring rush (experience that was valuable in later important duties). Near the close of his first year in the fraternity Gean's brothers saw fit to elect him to one of the most responsible and important offices in the chapter, treasurer. He served in this office for the entire 1962-63 school year. His tenure was characterized by the excellence and efficiency that have come to be his trademarks. Re decoration of the lounge was undertaken under Gean's financial direction. At the end of the year fraternity funds were in excellent ' order, and the ticklish job of keep ing brothers and pledges up-to date on their financial obligations had been handled with so much discretion and ability that Gean was elected president of Pi Kappa Alpha for the fall of 1963. His par ticipation and ability had also earned him election as treasurer of the Inter-Fraternity Council. During the summer preceding this academic year, Gean began preparations for successful terms in both of the important offices he was to hold in the coming year. lie discussed plans for his fra ternity's success in the Fall Rush and throughout that semester. lie also worked closely with Dean Cooper in setting up the new rush program that was so successfully instituted this past fall. At the same time he laid the groundwork for disposing of the large accumu lation of debts incurred by the I.F.C. prior to his taking office. All of his work and planning paid off. It was probab this same deeply ingrained custo that prevented his re - electio Upon turning in his gavel, I picked up the pledgemaster's mai ual and he's done an admirable j< in molding new Pikas. One of the most important a complishments of Gean as frate nity president was the instigati4 of a Pika alumni chapter here Columbia. Working with M R. E. B. Stewart, alumni counselc he helped to found what is now thriving association that has be< and will be a great help to t] fraternity. As I.F.C. treasurer, he has doi an outstanding job. Receiving total debt of around $1,250.4 when he took office, he turned tl books over to his successor with cash-on-hand balance of $541.0 This was accomplished by pain taking bookkeeping, attention detail, prompt collection of duo and assessments and good ol, fashioned hard work. He has bee undoubtedly, the best I.F.C. trea urer that Carolina has had in r cent years. He introduced the idq of an I.F.C. rush brochure at provided the funds for carryir out this project after its approvf He also served as an official del gate to the National Inter-Frate nity Council Conference. He wi almost solely responsible for t] success of this spring's rush-ha ing signs put up, arranging fo proper procedures and selectii the dates in association with DeL Cooper. His services have been b hind the scenes in many cases, h they have been invaluable and a complished with superior enerj and efficiency. On the personal level, Gean %sell liked and respected by all wl know him. His impeccable dress an outward indication of the goo taste, neatness and efficiency th cause him to stand out. Excellence in service to his fr: ternity and to the entire fraternit system is found in Gean Martin1 such a high degree that he is extremely tine candidate for a awvard given on these basis. Wine stains: Sprinkle with salt, WNICHES IT 0., INC. is Greeks i Banquet In conjunction, the Inter-Fra ternity Council and Pan-hellenic Council, held the annual I.F.C. banquet Friday, April 3, at the Forest Lake Country Club. The speaker was Dr. Lee S. Tittle, a Methodist minister and a former Lambda Chi Alpha. The banquet was held for the purpose of recognizing those men and women who have been out standing in the various greek so rorities and fraternities on cam pus. An outstanding faculty mem ber was also chosen and honored. Receiving these awards were Belle Howe of Alpha Delta Pi, the outstanding sorority woman of the year. Belle has worked diligently for a greater USC, and she will long be remembered for her ef forts. Gean Martin of Pi Kappa Alpha was honored as the out standing fraternity man of the year. The outstanding fraternity men of the year were Jim Shelley of ATO; Doug Elmore, Phi Kap; and Lloyd Hendricks of SAE. The overall sports trophy was received by SAE. This is higly de sired by the fraternities here. The final award was presented to the outstanding faculty member of this university this year. Dean Cooper, dean of men, was its re cipient. Although he is relatively new here, Dean Cooper is well liked and much respected. For Clothes then use boiling water method. Chi Psi' s Host At Reception Alpha Beta of Chi Psi Frater nity was host to a faculty drop-in March 18. Professors and their wives met in the newly decorated Chi Psi lodge for coffee and ap petizers in the late afternoon. Steve Niver, who organized the affair, remarked on the large turn out of the faculty, "who found the fraternity to be more than a drink ing club." Steve expressed regret that even more professors could not be present. There were ap proximately fifty in attendance. Among those present at the drop-in were Dean Harold Brun ton, a C'hi Psi alumnus from Stev ens Institute of Technology, and Dr. G"orge C. Brauer who was initiated into the Fraternity in early March. D)r. Brauer is Alpha Beta's faculty adviser and a Pro fessor of English. IDean Brunton is Associate Dean of Administration at the University and was recently commended in Chi Psi's national magazine. A thing of remark among fra ter-nity men is that Chi Psi's call their house a lodge. A log cabin in the woods near the University of Michigan, at a time when fac ulty were somewhat hostile to fra ternities, may b)e considered the prototype of the present chapter house.
