Invitations to the tea were sent out to all Chinese students in the Columbia areca. This included not only our fellow classmates here at U.S.C. but also those from Co lumbia College and the Lutheran Seminary. Originally, t h e r e were three, the'Shaw twins, Ric and Ron, and a fellow student at the University of New Hamp shire, Dave Craig. T h e y had their debut, so to speak, at fra ternity parties and other activi ties on their campus, but their initial experiences with vocaliz ing came much earlier. In fact, the Brandywine Sing ers might even he termeld "old pros." They entertained friends back in the childhood days of summer camp and gatherings around bonfires. Now they have ex panded; Fred Corhett and Hial Brown (also from U.N.II.) joined the group within a year of t h e i r campus start. The five of them take their work very seriously and are not content to merely sing. They strive to join their voices In a perfect Wend and thus sensitize their listeners to the true essence of folk songs. They w o r k e d diligently to search out folk repertoire, an(d are well aware that material for folk songs is hard to come bv. ub Quickly newly formed s a i I i n g club at U.S.C. It grew quickly out of the interest of a group of guys whe went sailing together in Charles ton, and Professor Richard Mol ton of the Economics Department, who hecame its sponsor. They talked it up a r o u n d campus, contacting some of the people they knew had boats, anI t before long up went the poster announcing the f i r s t organiza ' tional meeting. It was held just ~ prior to Christmas holidays, an( 17 or 18 people proved intereste( enough to attend. Most have undergone some transformation so as to bring out the qualities which the group feels are most important. But then the folk song is a continually changing art form by its very nature. (Any encyclopedia will confirm that last statement.) So the changes made by the Brandy wine Singers do not alter the status of the songs. An old acquaintance of the Brandywines, a folk song en titled "Two Little Boys," made a lasting impression on the sing ers when they were boys them selves. They hoarded it in their h e a r t s, and, in later years, produced their own version of it. Other songs come from differ ent sectiolns (of the U. S., Canada. and heaven knows where else! The important thing is that somehow the Brandywines have found them, have re-interpreted them, and have offered t h e i r renditions to the anxious public. Other songs that the singers have revised include "Here's To The Girls (Raspberries, Straw herries), "Devil's Waitinl' (On Bald Mountain)," and "Two-Ten. Six-Eighteen." Organized proves itself an "actively func tioning group" to obtaini monetary assistance from the student activi ties fund. On April 25 will be held the first regatta with The Citadel. the only othir S. C. school with a sailing club. Later this spring U.S.C. ilay compete in the Mid Atlantic sailing meet at Annap olis. The host school furnishes the boats in both cases. In the event U.S.C. should sponsor a regatta, the Columbia sailing clul would help us out. Every club neimer interested (an try out for the team.
