The unit were performer Comnus. English 5 Progra m Grant To Provide $500 To 35 Frosh Gov. Donald S. R u s s e l 1 has established a scholarship award program for proficiency in English which will provide 35 South Caro lina high school students $500 each during their first year of college, Dr. Havilah Babcock said today. Dr. Babcock, head of the De partment of English at the Uni versity of South Carolina, is chair man of the committee administer ing the Russell Scholarship Awards. The scholarship program will begin with the 1964-65 academic, year and high school students who plan to enter college in the sum mer or fall of 1964 will be eligible. Recipients may attend any ac credited four-year college or uni versity in South Carolina which maintains a liberal arts curricu lum. FEach scholarship will be paid Graduates Atoms And Some aspects of biological proc esses are still mysteries, but two graduate students and a chemistry professor at USC are conducting research which will help solve them. Muhammad S. Sahli of Beirut, Lebanon, and Fuk-Luen Lam of H on g K on g are analyzing the three-dimensional spacial arrange ment of atoms bonded together in selected molecules. Goldberg of the CrucibleEditor Lists Deadline For Next Issue Carolina s t ude ntsa who have manuscripts or art work and are interested in 'having them pub lished are reminded of the im pending deadline for the Winter issue of the Crucible. "Everything has to be in to the office by February 20," warns Dale Alan Bailes, editor, "as we want to have the issue to the printers and back by the first week in March." Bailes continued, "We are espe cially interested in any art work that can be considered for a cover or for illustrations. But, it must be work that can be printed in black and white and still retain its effectiveness." Bailes added that a new copy editor has been named to replace Evelyn Godshall, who graduated in January. He is Alan Shealy, a pre -Law student and E n gli sh major from Prosperity, S. C. "The Russell awards are unique," Dr. Babcock said, "be cause they are based on com petence in the use of English which is rapidly becoming the uni versal tongue. "Clarity of communications be tween nations and individuals was never so important as it is today," Dr. Babcock said. "Effective com munications could possibly avert war." By establishing these scholar ships, Dr. Babcock said Gov. Rus sell has recognized that good com munications is fast becoming a social and political necessity. The two-year grant will enabli Sahli and Lam to work on thei: project, titledl "Asymmetric In duction via Elimination," unti Aug. 31, 1966. Sahli was born in Haifa, Pale stine in 1935. He studied at th British - Lebanese Mission Schoo in Beirut and earned a bachelo: of science degree at the Americai University of Beirut. He came ti the University of South Carolini in the fall of 1961 and hopes ti earn master of science and docto of philosophy degrees in organi chemistry. |Lam studied at Chung Chi Col lege in Hong Kong before enterinj the University of South Carolini in 1962. Dr. Goldberg received the dlocto of philosophy degree from Indiani University andl taught at the Uni versity of Illinois before joininj the University of South Carolini faculty in 196;0. His previous re search has been in structural an< synthetic chemistry.
