S o u t h Carolina's basketball
Gamecocks started in where they
left off last season putting on
one of the finest group efforts
seen since the Civil War before
bowing to a strong UNC team
92-87 last Monday night at
Chapel Hill, N. C.
Jimmy Collins led the scoring
with 29 points as he out - per
formed All-ACC candidate Billy
Cunningham who hit 25 points.
Collins hit many of his shots
from the outside and on driving
layups.
The proficiency of Dean Smith's
Tar Heels was evident from the
opening tip-off as they jumped
into a 10-4 lead after two min
utes of play. The score went to
16-7 in favor of UNC when the
Gamecocks came to life with a
nine-point barrage just to re
mind the 4,500 people on hand
they had come to play.
