Opening the USC Artists Series
Wednesday, October 16, at 8 p.m.
in the Field House will be Jose
Malina and his S p a n i s h dance
group.
The show, which has traveled
throughout Europe and in the
Orient, has been acclaimed by re
viewers as, "Dazzling," "A rare
treat," and "One in a million."
The program consists of dances,
songs, and piano pieces displaying
life in Spain.
The show opens with "Caracoles
De Cadiz." This is a dance inspired l
by the popular "paseo," the hour H
when all of Spain put on its finery k
and goes out for an evening stroll. -.
This dance was created in Cadiz
where the women were noted for
their exaggerated dress and for the
"caracoles" or curl-like movements
which they made with their fans
when fanning themselves.
The show then takes us to a
bandit's hideout high in the Sierra
Mountains where the dancers per- '
form Los Contrabandistas. Ca
Sometime later we visit Gra- Clu
nada where the gypsies have made in
caves into homes, where their sor- lau
rows and joys are transformed for
into dance and song portrayed in "'
"Zorongo Gitano." to r
The show commences with the thei
dancers p er f or m ing "Taberna -
Flamenca." This dance takes place
in a corner of a tavern in SevilleDe
where singing and dancing areDe
spontaneous and build to a frenzy req~
which becomes contagious to the Pl
point where the audience and per- dral
formers become one.
Special invitations are being sent
to faculty members pemiting
them and their guests to be ad- uled
mitted without charges. cu
The series is free to all Carolinau
students who present valid ID Co
cards, and to a Carolina student's that
date, even if the date is not a at
student at USC. oft
