M2Coc cOcY Tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock eleven eager Game cock football players will stand on a field of green in Dur ham, N. C. with only one thought in mind, "BEAT HELL OUT OF DUKE." The band will play the National Anthem, the crowd will cheer and the opening kick-off will soar through the air into the waiting hands. Teams of eleven will converge and the 1963 football season will be underway. For the Gamecocks of South Carolina the Duke game is almost as important. as the one with Clemson. There is a great rivalry between the two schools. The past three years Carolina fans have cried for Blue Devil blood, but their cries have been unswered. Duke has ruled the pesky Gamecocks since 1960. Only in 1962 was there some feeling of satisfaction from the game for Carolina fans. In that year the Gamecocks almost pulled the upset of the year in the ACC when they led the Blue Devils for fifty-eight minutes. but fate took its toll and Duke the victory with a last minute touchdown. Dean Findley's two field goals were just not enough. Last, year there were great expectations for a vic tory over our northern rivals, but again we had to be content with just saying, "Wait until next year." The first half was ours, but unfortunately there are two halves in a ball game. Twice we shadowed the Duke goal line, but twice we failed to score. A break for Duke in the second half and one against us gave us the short end of a game that was much closer than the score in dicates. Next year has become a reality. Tomorrow we have the chance to keep that promise we made as we filed out of Duke Stadium last September 29. The Gamecocks are as ready as can be expected for an opening game. With three weeks of practice and two game-scrimnmages under their belts the boys are eager for some real action. For some it will be there last opportunity to beat the Blue Devils, for others a chance to amend for last year's defeat. The team is ready mentally. The impor tance of the game is well in their minds. Some of us are going up to cheer for our boys in person, while others will have to be content with being at Duke in spirit only. Spirit can carry a team a long way if it is given the right direction. The ball players themselves sense a much greater feeling of dluty when they knowv that the Student Body is behind them. Football is just a game, b)ut out ot this game comes some meaning. Eleven men battle for an oval piece of leather, while thousands of others cheer thenm on. In its basic form football might seem silly, but we all derive pleasure and enjoyment fronm it so there must be more to it than meets the eye. Every year we say this is going to be our year, but it never happens. Carolina is alwvays one step behind the front runners. Somebody has to finish less than first, but why should it always be us. Certainly, our football players and coaches are as good as the rest of the Conference. What seems to be the trouble ? D)o we lack spirit ? Must a team gc undefeated every year to develop spirit? When the Gamecocks take the field on Saturday they will have a job to do, but we as members of the Student Hody also have a job to do. Defeat does not determine the dedication of a team and its coaches. Let's get out and support the Gamecocks more than ever before, b)ut more important let's give them the incentive and sup port to BEAT HELL OUT OF DUKE.
