Golf Seaso With Sixti BY MIKE SEWELL Sports Writer The U.S.C. golf team found plenty of trouble in the difficult Cascades Golf Course and stiff opposition from excellent golfers as the Gamecocks participated in the ACC Tournament on May 10-11 at Hot Springs, Virginia. The Carolina boys found windy weather and Northern terrain not quite suitable as the 'Cocks fell to sixth place in the final conference standings. This was a considerable disappointment to the team for the boys are better than these stand ings indicate. Neither of the South Carolina teams fared too well as we took sixth place and Clemson, conference weak sister, finished last for the second year in a row. The final standings were as follows: 1. Wake Forest; 2. Maryland; 3. Duke; 4. North Carolina; 5. Virginia; 6. South Carolina: 7. N. C. State; 8. Clemson. Powerful Wake Forest won as was expected, under the terrific playing of Jay Segal who had a 72 and a 73 for a 36-hole total of 145. The big shocker was the tak ing of second place by Maryland. Segal Individual statistics on the play er were not available but the out standing players were Segal of Wake and sophomore Tom Arnold from UNC who fired a one-under par 70 during the first day. Our Gamecocks finished fourth in the ACC last year and despite this year's mediocre performance, the prospects of strong contention for next year lcok good. There are no seniors on the team and all the boys are gaining experience rapidly. In addition, the team has several rising sophomores to contribute their services next year. The team has nothing to be ashamed of: they had a season record of 8-2-1, pulled omtc spectacular u p s e t s, and brought home the state champion ship. The future points only up ward. The team des erves a hearty ) commendation from the student )ody and the coaches.
