S. teachers and stu dents of Philosophy in Oxford, Paris and Tubingen (West Ger many), June 23 through July 17, 1963. The seminar is jointly sponsored by American University, Washing ton, D. C., and the Institute of Euro pean Studies, Chicago-headquar tered nonprofit educational institu tion specializing in overseas study programs. Institute and American Univer sity officials described the sem inar as an effort to establish an exchange of ideas and working methods between U. S. and Euro pean philosophers and keep U. Shaw of Carolina. Dr. Shaw's article, "Midtowr Redevelopment," appears in the current issue of the periodical hE edits, "Business and Economic Re. search. However, a "drastic solution' like midtown renovation-by-court order can be avoided, Dr. Shaw writes, if business leaders and civic-minded organizations make determined efforts to resolve con flicts and work cooperatively with city officials and private planning groups. Malls and promenades are prin cipal features of the examples Dr. Shaw cites, and he comments: "Under the right conditions a mall, a promenade, a plaza or other similar retail core redevelop ment can substantially improve the central district as a shopping and service area, but it is no cure-all for downtown problems." Traffic The mall-promenade-plaza idea does not "of itself" solve problems of traffic congestion, parking and obsolescent buildings, he writes.
