Mile Relay D As Birds Fall BY BOB LOUGHMAN Sports Writer The Tigers of Clemson broke a five-year jinx by defeating the Gamecocks Saturday in a duel meet held at the Rex Enright Athletic Center. Clemson had to win the last event of the day, the mile relay, in order to nose by Carolina 74-70. Wynn was the key man for Clem son, netting a total of 15 % points and Rose of USC paced his team with 11. Wynn, the ACC sprint champ, won the 100 and the 220 and edged out Carolina's Bruce Byrne by a lean in both races. Rose on the other hand won the 880 and loped along in the mile and two mile with teammate Ken Smith and tied both races with Smith. Clem son was not in contention in any of the distance runs. Carolina's Carl Hendricks walked off with the honors in the high hurdles and Bland Addison fresh from a 48.5 win the previous Wed nesday at North Carolina was nipped at the tape by Clemson's Cecil Huey in 49.1. The big upset of the day came in the discus where Bill Nies got off the best heave of his career and defeated Dick Dobbs, the ACC record holder in this event. Nies threw the discus 149 feet seven and one-half inches. John Wilburn also got off his best efforts in the jave lin when he threw it 196 feet Golf Team Up; Tennis Team? The Gamecocks' state champion golf team takes this week off to prepare for Monday's season end ing dual match at Clemson. After that, the Gamecock Golfers, with a 7-2-1 dual match record, will enter the ACC tournament May 10-11 at Hot Springs, Va. Roland Brown set a new USC mark in the pole vault of 13 feet six inches. The husky sophomore was pushed all the way by Clem son's Jackson who also cleared the height but Brown was awarded the win on fewer misses. Ronnie Col lins copped another first place for the 'Cocks in the high jump. Injuries to Dicky Melton, a broad jumper, and Neil Atkinson, a hurdler, left the Gamecocks vul nerable in these events. Carolina was unable to place in either the broad jump or the hop, step and jump. Frosh Track Team Stomps Clemson 12-5 The same fans that saw Clem son shade the Varsity also saw a strong Carolina Freshman squad virtually run the Clemson Frosh off the track. Carolina won every running event except the 220 in its 12 to five devastation of the Tigers. David Gatch and Toni Monroe aided the cause by taking four first places between them. Monroe won the broad jump and the hop, step and jump; Gatch won the high hurdles in a fine 14.7 and then came back and edged out a Clemson man in the 330 inter mediate hurdles. Mike McGuinness loped to an easy win in the 440, covering the distance in 49.5. Jim Poulos beat everyone including the v a r s i t y runners in his 10:03.6 effort in the two-mile. Old reliable Bob Crombie ran away from the rest of the field and turned in an impressive 1:55.5 for the 880. Fulton Dukes had little trouble as he walked off with the 100 in 9.8. The shot put was won by Caro lina's Bob Morgan with a chuck of 40 feet 2%/ inches. The Gamecocks also won both the relay events. Dukes, Hatchell, Crombie, and McGuinness won the 440 relay and then the same team with Rea McKinney running in Dukes' place won the mile relay in 3:22.7.
