Each of the so cieties has at one time or another played an important part in the history of the University, and it is at this time that we recognize them.) It was Senator Hammond - who rose on the U. S. Senate floor and addressed the Northern Sena tors saying, "You dare not make war on cotton, for cotton is king!" Upon the occasion of his being defeated in his first attempt for the governorship he wrote, "I t wish that South Carolina were upon the cliff overlooking the t abyss of Hell and I had the power to push it over." More recent members include J. Rion McKis . sick, James H. Hammond III, Ash ton H. Williams, Yancey McLeod, and Thomas H1. The Euphradian Society, in def erence to the judgment of its pred ecessors and in veneration of those who fought and died for the Southern Cause, has no like inten tions of reinstating the name of Francis Lieber.
