Weems was regarded as the finest hurdler in the South ,and he upheld his reputation by setting a number of - indoor hurdle records while com peting for the New York AC. The congenial Southerner is most well remembered for his habit of changing his shirt between every race. Baskin said that this practice helped win a few close races be cause the judges were always look ing to see what color shirt he was wearing. Coach Baskin's feats in competi tion are equally matched by his ability as a Coach. Baskin's most successful pupil was Spec Towns, who won the 1936 Olympic meter High hurdles. Towns set several world records, among them, the 60 yard high hurdle mark which Bas kin had set a few years before. Towns is now the track coach at the University of Georgia where I askin was coach before coming to USC.
