Bass Preview Of Gamecock By HENRY EICHEL. Sports Writer Marvin Bass is a six-foot plus chunk of geniality who rumbles when he speaks. This week he spoke of football, his main stock in-trade. "The purpose of this spring's practice," he said, "will be to im prove the players on the funda mentals of football. The first week, the plafers will be divided evenly with offensive a n d defensive groups. During the two hours a day that we'll practice, we'll drill the boys on the basic positions, and for the offensive boys, on blocking techniques." Emphasizing his points with the two hams he uses for hands, the big man went on: "We'll do a lot of group work; the interior linemen will concentrate on inside defense. The ends will work on perimeter play, We plan to try our end sweeps, too." Bass plans to use a four-team system during practice, but next September the old offensive and sporl M1 The spirit which Carolim this past season in supportin mended, but the treatment w subject to from some of the 1 asset to South Carolina's repi Duke's All-American, Art places he has played in the co Field House the most. "We're going to try to find the best 33 men on the squad," ex plained the coach. "Then, towards the end of the practice season, we'll begin to develop team play, running the four teams against each other. Then, we'll probably run against Duke's defenses. "The practices will be open to the public, They'll begin at 4:30 since a lot of our boys have school work in the afternoon." Bass wants the students to come to watch. "After all, it's the stu dents who make up the school." The team that faces Duke September 21 will be physically stronger than last year's version. "They'll able to stand up to their opponents and play nose-to-nose football," is the way Coach Bass put it. The backfield, spurred by quar terback Dan Reeves, is larger this year and has more depth. "Where we depended on one or two good men, now we can depend on everybody," Bass explained. "Last year, Reeves and Billy Gambrell were our one-two punch. They could pressure the other side's defense, cause it to break mentally." But, lack of depth ,according to Bass, was Carolina's greatest prob lem last year, it caused the team to flub on obvious situations. "The defense was unable to coin- t tain the other guy in crucial situa tions. On third-down plays with only a few yards to go, the offense was stalled time after time. Maybe we were just snake-bitten and the hard luck will change," said Bass. t The coach views the 1963 season c with high optimism. "Our boys are of better quality than they were in the past. Jiminy Crickets, the boys are getting better coaching in high school than they've ever had be fore," said the coach. It's the students, though, who will be the team's backbone. "School spirit is everything," said Bass. "Everything falls into place when spirit is high; then we're tough." Profs Battle Students Sat.
