Coach Chuck Noe has remarked that he made sure that students would fill the gym at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. Eventually word got to the legislators through Ohuck Noe's campaigning and Vir ginia Tech got one of the finest coliseums in the nation. Still the place was a sell-out. What Carolina evidently and desperately needs is a new Field House. This will attract people from all over the state and will bring capital into Columbia. This will especially be true when the boys that are being recruited now come to Carolina and are able to cope - with the teams to beat the top teams on a fairly regular basis. Besides, the students would all be able to get who do not come now ' would be attracted by the Field i House. The Field House would be i a gem in the cap of Carolina and a the entire state. The minors are decreasing and a plan has been proposed ;o have college leagues. These leagues, composed of college layers, would be financed by the majors and would be )layed during the summer. This would give the college )layer more experience and would eliminate a reason for crabbing college players. A reason would be that a player :ould not develop in the short college season and would get more experience in a shorter time in the minors. Interleague play has been discussed. and a poll has shown that many people are in favor of the proposal, a two-one majority. The main objection is that the World Series would not be such an attraction. This is a serious consideration. but the Series would probably not be hurt. The National Basketball Association has interleague play and the play offs still hold as much interest. The sports world is currently being stirred up by the Three Messketeers: Charles Finley, Pete Quesada, and Frank Lane. Finley has made trouble for Kansas City since his pur chase of the A's franchise from the state of the late Arnold Johnson. He hired Frank Lane as general manager. Frank Lane in turn hired Joe Gordan whom he had fired and re hired at Cleveland. Finley finally forced Lane into quitting. He soon messed up the organization. His general manager quit, he fired two managers, and many scouts quit. Finley was left with very little personnel. Pat Friday was the new general manager. He had been running Mr. Finley's insurance business but had switched to baseball. He does not seem to be doing too well in his job although the farm products may save him. Finley attacked the press for no reason and in such bad taste and so publicly that Ford Frick, the Commissioner of Baseball, had to apologize to Ernie Mehl, sports editor of the Kansas City Star. Finley continued to negotiate with Texas businessmen concerning a possible move of the city, one of the newer franchises to Dallas-Fort Worth, while he was denying the charge. He finally demanded a new stadium so the people could prove that they wanted him to stay. The interference extended to players. Manny Jimenez was a prime candidate for Rookie of the Year and was hitting in the .320's. He is a singles hitter and is not a power hitter. Finley called his manager in and told him that Jimenez was a smart ballplayer, that he could hit home runs, and that he should commence doing so. Jimenez, swinging for the iences, finished at .301. Charles Finley recently made the statement that he knew other owners wanted to get out of baseball but would stay and make Kansas City a successful franchise. Let us hope that he does it in the right way, the right way for baseball. Frank Lane: During his first years of headline mak ing trading, Frank Lane seemed to be a shrewd trader. Success is not as good as failure in many cases. Soon he became a compulsive trader and, though we realize that this sounds very serious, his mind is not balanced well, at least in regard to trading ballplayers, not for the amount as for the seeming unnecessity in so many cases. Frank Lane took over the Chicago Packers. He is also knowledgable in the field of basketball (and football, also). He changed the name of the team to the Zephyrs and has traded right and left. The trades were not bad up to a point. The coaches have kept coming and so have the players. It is to be hoped that fans will not be stopped by such antics. The third man, General Pete Quesada, solved the problem by quitting after unfounded attacks on the press recently, and many other blunders. The blunders are not what is bad. it is the intentional running of absolutely everything. It's the Laugh Riot of 1963 .. .
