The sparkplug of the Cavalier f f e n s e is quarterback Gary uozzo who ranks third in the ACC in passing offense behind 3ick Shiner and Junior Edge. Civic Improvements The arguments that hospital, ed ication, and sewerage facilities hould be improved before spend ng money on a mere entertain nent project are usually heard by his same group. It's a fact that hese civic needs should require lue attention, but if they are so mportant that they are to be the >lockade for the construction of he Civic Center, why were they utvoted several years ago? Little Las been mentioned about them mntil the time was called for vot ng on the Civic Center. Conditions aven't gotten that much worse, eople are just using them as an xcuse. If the government is orced to appropriate taxes for he improvement of these civic eeds, it will probably be done rhether we get a coliseum, or ot. At present, if the maximum ax increase is imposed for the ichland County Civic Center, Co imbia's tax rates would still be omewvhat lower than that of our eighboring cities. Past Failures Then comes the question of past silures in promoting added social ttractions. Again, I'll agree that is hard to foresee building some ring of this size and at its ex ense when the same type of vents, such as ice shows, sports ttractions, and musicals have been airly unsuccessful. But, just ana rze the situation -- when people Ian to attend something like an pera, or concerts, they want to go i the highest style - they want > dress for the occasion and they rant to enjoy it when they get 1ere. Let's face it, who's going wear a tux or evening gown > the Township Auditorium and ien strain their ears to hear the ruow because of the poor ocustical rrangement? It just doesn't pos 'ss the atmosphere for these vents. As for a housing for sports ac vities, Head Football Coach Mar in Bass stated, "Any improve uent for the city of Columbia ould definitely mean an improve uent for the University of South arolina." Head Basketball Coach huck Ne also replied, "I've only men here a few months, but P'd ry if there is no other civic cen ~r in South Carolina, basing on asults of ones in other cities, there definitely a need for one here." In total offense he ranks fourth behind Shiner, Edge, and "Deacon Dan" Reeves. Cuozzo has thrown for four TD's and has run for four others. Chuck Noe, Head Basketball Coach, has scouted the Cavaliers for the past three years, two at Virginia Tech and one at USC and so is quite an expert on UVA football. Of Cuozzo, he says, "He's the best quarterback in college football as far as setting up a play with the clock against him. Cuozzo's a very poised quarter back. He doesn't make many mis takes." Carl Kuhn, a left-handed thrower who likes to run, is the able back up for Cuozzo but Mr. C. runs the second unit, also, when the team is in trouble. Jim Hoffarth, right end, has been the leading pass-receiver this year with three scores. Hoffarth is the best all-around end on the squad. Other top flankermen are Dennis Andrews, Myron McWil liams, and Joe Kehoe. Halfback is a strong point for the Cavaliers. Ted Rzemplouch leads the ball carriers with 228 yards and a 4.8 average. His top performance was 64 yards in eight carries a g a i n s t Wake Forest. Bobby Freeman is perhaps the most underrated Virginian. He is good on offense and is a standout on defense. Also shining in the UVA back field are: John Hepler, one of the fastest men on the team, has caught one TD pass; Mike Stevens who has also registered six points with a catch; and Terry Sieg, who returned a punt 79 yards to pay dirt against VPI in a losing effort. The starting fullback is Tom Griggs, who also does the punting for the Cavaliers. Last year he averaged 33.5 yards a kick after a 36.4 mark in his sophomore year. lie does a good job going through the line, also. Coach Noe reports that the line is strong and has a lot of experi ence. The standout lineman is Dave ("Little David") Graham, a p)re-season sleeper pick for All American at left tackle. He has been called the best lineman ever to play for Virginia. Fairfield, Connecticut, home of Gamecock's Larry Gill and Jim Johnson, is also the place where Graham hangs his hat. At right tackle is Dick Myers, playing first string in his first var sity season, after transferring from George Washington Univer sity. The g u ar ds are Turn Iey Todd, who doubles as line backer, and Bob Rowley who cloubles as linebacker and kicker and who led the team in scoring last year. At center is Andy Mo ran, who has won the best block ng award. Virginia leads the ACC in total lefense with a list in pass de fense and a second in rushing de Eense. In summing up the Cavaliers, coach Noe says, "They know that this will be their toughest game. We will have to beat them. They Ion't beat themselves." for his statements, said, "I lived n a town of about 5,000 people. We heard the same arguments as riere in Columbia, but the coliseum was built. We averaged 9,000 spec bators per game, almost three times the population of our town. Rligh school basketball was one of the main attractions that caused urs to boom." In closing, I would just like to remind the Carolina students of the rather "inadequate" seating facilities at last year's basketball games. Students, we had already paid for our seats for every home game, but yet as many as a hun Ired boys and girls were turned away on several occasions.
