'by RED SCHUMPERT Before the '62 football year began the American Foot ball Coaches Association selected Carolina's Billy Gambrell as a candidate for pre-season All-America. At the mid-point of Billy's last year of college football, direct telephone con versations and interviews were made and these people ex pressed their views: COACH MARVIN BASS (USC) - "I think Billy's All America calibre. He reminds me of Charlie Justice. There are very few backs in the country that possess his ability, I'd rate him with any of them!" COACH ARA PARSEGH IAN (NORTHWESTERN) - "Billy played v e r y well against us. He didn't have many chances to run the ball (four) in our game, but from By Gambrell the few times that I did see him run I would say that he is an outstanding prospect." COACH MURRAY (DUKE)-"He's a great player. All America backs are hard to come by; they're made on the player and his teams' records." COACH GRIFFITH (GEORGIA) - "I think Billy has real good chances of making All-America. He's the toughest back we've played against as far as being a complete threat in running and in every other phase of the game. We feared him as much as any other back we've met!" COACH HILDEBRAND (WAKE FOREST)--"Billy's a real fine player. To me, when you speak of All-America, that includes everything. I think he's a wonderful back - one of the finest in the conference - he sure gave us 'fits.' He's a tremendous asset to the Carolina team." COACH HICKEY (NORTH CAROLINA) - "From the way Billy played up here and in all the other games this year, I'd say he is truly an All-America halfback. He's the best halfback we've seen all year !" ASS'T. COACH CARROLL HUNTRESS (MARYLAND) -"Gambrell's the best back in the ACC; he's a great player. le has a good chance to make second or third team All America, but his chances for first team will be hurt by the losses that the Carolina team has suffered." BROADCASTER'S VIEWPOINT BOB FULTON (WCOS RADIO) - "I think Billy's chances for second or third team All-America are good There's no better two-way back in the country!" TEAMMATES' VIEWPOINTS DICK DAY (FULLBACK) - "I think Billy has a good chance of becoming All-America. He will probably be the leading ground gainer and will probably have the best rush ing average in the conference at the end of the season. I believe this, along with his outstanding performances, will help him a lot." DAN REEVES (QUARTERBACK)-"In all my days of watching football I don't think I've ever seen a halfback as good as Billy. He has real good moves and acts quickly. Not only is he a great runner, but as far as size is con sidered, he's also the best blocking back I've ever seen. He doesn't mind hitting the big end when he has the assign ment . . . le's the best all around player I've ever seen!" RICHARD LOMAS (CENTER) - "I believe Billy's chances at getting All-America will depend a lot on the outcome of the entire team this year. Billy surely has the ability himself. is quickness is showed on dlefense as well as on offense. I don't think anyone can get behind him. He certainly dloesn't mind hitting anyone on defense either." SPORTS WRITERS' VIEWPOINTS FURMAN BISHER (SPORTS EDITOR - ATLANTA JOURNAL)-"I haven't seen Billy p)lay yet, but from what I've read he's a rather impressive young player and has great running ability. One of my reporters, Bill Robertson, said, 'Billy's the greatest running back I've seen all year.' I'd say he merits All-America consideration." LEWIS LORDI (UPI)-"I think Billy's one of the better ball p)layers in the South. He impressed me with his running. I've only seen him in one game - Georgia -- He's the best running b)ack( I've seen in a long time." EDITORS NOTE My opinion of Billy's chances for All-America can be simp)lified by one or two statements - I think his record speaks for~ itself, lie is leading the conference in rushing (350 yards f r an average of 6.9) and is second in scoring with 32 points. His midl-season rushing and scoring records already bypass that of the '61 season. Billy might not be the fastest back in the country, b)ut he surely is the most ELUSIVE. I'll have to go along with Coach Murray and Richatrd Lomas' statements --- a lot will depend on the team's record.
