I really don't blame him. Coach Bob Stevens leaving to go to Oklahoma, I mean. Considering the handicaps he had to cope with during his three-year stay here, all his leaving proves is how woefully lacking this "mighty" University I is in some respects. We have the campus. We have the courses. We have 9 a tradition that can really be felt at times. We have a student body, a faculty, and a group of alumni and friends all over the state that can make this a wonder ful place to be just with their warmth and sincere personal friendship. V But all this isn't enough. We also have the most gosh- v awful inadequate playing arena on the Eastern Seaboard. 1 C I really don't blame him for leaving. t IT AIN'T ALL MONEY! Coach Stevens admits that he likes it here and that it t was a hard decision to make. Of course, he was offered more money, but I don't think that played such a large part as some people think. Bob Stevens is the type to value t coaching accomplishments more than monetary gain. No, just face the bare attendence facts. Oklahoma University plays its basketball in a little palace, which t will seat 4,800. Compare it with Carolina, enrollment nearly 6,000, and a seating capacity of around 3,300, t depending on how the Fire Department is feeling at E game time. No wonder it's hard to recruit for this school, or even hard to schedule some opponents at home. This antiquated closet they call the Field House isn't known as the "snake pit" among USC opponents for nothing. And its pointed t planks are no easy test for a spectator's endurance, either. t "STEVENSISM" h With the exit of Bob Stevens from the USC scene a little bit of his personal enthusiasm for basketball in particular and Carolina in general will go with him. We've lost good ball players, a great coach, and some of our vital spirit be cause of that slum on Sumter Street. How long is this going to go on? The "colosium" has t< been rumored (and I mean rumored) since I was in k high school. How about somebody getting off their p proverbial tails and getting something DONE!!! V What Was r USC Like Long Ago? Seen Thru th A week later, twenty and ten years ago, Carolina was experi encing some success, mainly in 1942, as these excerpts from the "Gamecocks" of '42 and '62 show. This time of year, a score ago, Carolina was finishing out a great year sports-wise. The track team, especially, was displaying its prowness, although it failed to obscure t h e achievements of Coach Havilah Babcock's golfers. The eindermen followed up their smashing win in the State Meet with a 68 to 58 victory over the N. C. State squad. Led by Mac Riley in the (lashes and JTack Little in the hurdles, the Birds survived a 20-point output by State's Andrews, a six-event man, to take the victory. In the State Meet, the Birds smashed all opposition, rolling up 75% points to beat the nearest team, Clemson, by 31 markers. Coach Penney got record-break ing performances from "Scooter" Rucks in the 440 and the USC mile relay team to pace the vic tory, his first state title in as many tries. In Golf, the USC swingers endled a virtual Citadel monopoly by rolling to a 14-stroke edge over the military men. Besides taking the team title, Coach Babcock's linksters produced the low scorer and most valuable player of the event in Carlton Dixon. Also, that afternoon, the Birds were to take on The Tigers from the Hills in the final baseball game of the season, after blank ing Wofford, .3-0, three days be fore. More recently, only ten years ago, Gamecock athletic fortunes had taken a turn for the worse. The golf team was fresh from a road trip which showed losses to Furman and Clemson. In their first track meet in two NTRLBATE years, the Birds, not fielding a FO SU AN FN squad the year before, took a 76-55 defeat at the hands of the Whntebah ecos1 Clemson Tigers.
