The Carolina baseball tean

the club as a whole, it meant th
first victory in their first fou

it meant his first in the past 24
games.
John Coleman, former Drehe:

the "Generals" only two hits th<
entire afternoon, he struck ou
eight and walked three.
Laney Ruff started the Caro

Twventy years ago at Carolina,
in the "Gamecock" of April Fool's
Day, 1942, the big news was the
State Track Meet that afternoon
in Clinton. The Gamecock cinder
men were favored in view of
their 71-60 dual-meet smashing
of a strong Clemson squad.
Dr. J. T. Penney, nowv President
of the Atlantic Coast Conference,
was then in his first year of
coaching the tracksters, and had
as his scoring stalwarts Mac
Riley in the dashes and Joe Krivo
nak, weight man, both state rec
ord holders.

Only 10 years ago, the sport
ln't situation was rather unsettled. A
sm- track team was heing fielded for
per, the first time since 1950, when a
Iinm virtual "pick-up" USC squad won
ree the state title.
.With only one experienced man
1s- returning, the trackmen were not
. *t expected to be especially strong
ing as they readied for their first
run meet in over two years against
gs the arch-rival Tigers from Clem
lah son.
" Pi Kappa Phi was the power in
Intramurals that year, winning
the basketball title over the In
dependent Rinky Dinks, 47-39.
The Pi Kaps also led in points
toward the All-Sports trophy.
The baseball team was readying
itself for a two-game invasion
from the hills of Clemson, and
was hoping its hitting would im
prove enough to support the fine
pitching the Birds have been
getting.
During that week, only ten
years ago, the Tennis team had
three matches scheduled, three
members of the USC boxing team
were going to the NCAA tourna
ment and a former Carolina tackle
had signed with the Los Angeles
Rams of the NFL.
That's the way things stood
here ten and twenty years ago.
Not much difference, eh? Look in
next week's "Gamecock" to find
out whether the track team won
the state title in '42, and beat
Clemson in '52, or whether Havi
lah Babcock's golfers won the
state championship twenty years
