Amid a surprisit amount of light and industr books flow through the baseme oC McKissick with information < every conceivable subject. This largely unknown and ui appreciated section of the Ur versity library system is charg, with keeping the libraries stock, with the books best fitted to car pus needs and making them rea ily obtanable by a complex cros filing system. There are many steps betweo a faculty member's desire for book and its appearance on tl shelf. Special Order A professor gets information books in his field from mat sources. When he finds a book I thinks should be available in t) library, or which he wishes to p1 on reserve for his students, I fills out a special purchase reque form and - with department approval - sends it to the librar There the card goes to tl order department where the info mation is checked against a formi, able array of references for a curacy, to avoid duplication, ar to see if the book can be boug] through sandard sources. Some cases - such as foreig out-of-print, and unusual books - require special handling. Each department of the Unive sity is allocated certain funds ea< year for the purchase of librai books. Once re a month a staff committee meets to choose new books to be pur id chased with the students in mind. Ig These books wind up on the Y, "Blue Star" shelf on the main nt floor of McKissick as recreational n reading for the students. Once a decision has been made ri- to purchase a book, an order is i- filled out and sent (ordinarily) to ad a book jobber. A copy of the order ed is sent to the Library of Congress n- for index cards for the book and d- other copies are filed to keel) li 5- brary records straight. Thanks to a complex system of cross-indexing, mn a professor can determine the a status of his order at any time. le Cataloguing When the books arrive, usually about two weeks after the order, )n they are unpacked by student as 1Y sistants and the invoices carefully Ie checked. This is great fun if the le invoice is made out in a foreign It money system. le The books are then loaded on st carts with a copy of the order slip al and sent to the cataloguing de Y. partment. These cards go to the main file in McKissick and also to UL or the Education Library if the book is to be put there. Cards are also filed for each book in the shelf list file of each library. Pockets (or slips) must be typed out for each book and each book and pocket stamped with an identifying number. Then the in dex number is written on the outside of the jacket with an electric stylus and covered with a coat of shellac. Knowledge Shared Every book on our library shelves represents not only the thought and effort of the author, but also hours of work by library personnel to bring that book to YOU. This is the kind of work that brings a great deal of pleasure to the professional librarian . . . the idea of sharing the world's knowl edge with others. As a student . . . as a citizen ... as a human being ... you owe it to yourself to open your horizons by reading. Relax this weekend with a good book . . . outdoors or in a cozy corner. Next week is National Library Week. Read a book .. . and watch your world grow! Lessons In Co Good Nigi fy Jean Derrick, Staff Writer Just what is college life? Here, in home - like surroundings, you can enjoy an evening with some sweet little thing-preferably a girl, but then, the housemother may not be doing anything. When you finally find a companion, you and the pretty little thing and the housemother can spend an eveninz talking or taking in some T.V. Now, you do this 'mder your wvn risk, but then it is I something to do. And speaking of panty raids, you girls don't have to sit around and do nothing. After all, there are boys on campus and I wonder why no one has ever thought of the girls having a boxer shorts raid. But then again, you do this under your own risk - the main reason for this is that there is a little old state which pro hibits the panty raids - I wonder which senator introdued this law Now that you have gottten out ol .iai! you might again find that you are in need of night life. Well, get a date and go to the only place where a college boy -r girl would find himself - the drive-in, or as it is affectionately called, the "'pas sion pit" of the young. For one, I don't know why the drive-ins are called this unless it is because of the had little pictures that are shown there. After a refreshing evening at the show, you and the (late will p)robably w"ant to go to some nice little night spot to feed the mout h. There are' several of these little spots around but find ing them is a pain - they seem to have an aversion to lig hts. If you look hard, you will eventually find one and after your eyes get used to the (lark, you can find a seat. Here, within the surroundings of paint ings and music, you and the date can en.joy getting effervescent. After you and the (late get this way' -- on soft dIrinks, of course, it will be time to take the sweet little thing back to her dorm. This takes courage, for the date has to sign in. After chewing six packs of chewing gum and giving you a sweet goodl-night kiss, she makes her way into the dorm. Good-night.
