Student Senate Minutes March 12, 1962 The regular meeting of the Student Senate was called to order by the President, John Chappell. The meeting was opened with prayer. The roll was called, and the minutes were approved as they appeared in "The Gamecock." COMMITTEE REPORTS: There were none. OLD BUSINESS: The president announced that the Cold War Seminar Committee has been granted $400.00. The State Student Legislature Observance Session and Business Session will be held Wednesday and Thursday, March 13 and 14 in Columbia. The Banquet will be held Wednesday night at the Columbia Hotel. Tickets will be $3.00 per person. The President read a letter from the Clariosophic Literary Society supporting the proposed Cold War Seminar. NEW BUSINESS: The President announced that the SUSGA Convention will be held April 26, 27, and 28, at Clemson College. Stu dent Government will send 10 representatives, five from the present Student Senate, and five from the new Student Senate which will be elected in the campus-wide elections on April 2. The floor was opened for nominations for representa tives to the convention from the present Student Senate or from the campus-at-large. Ben Boyd, John Chappell, Mike Daniel, Doug Gray, Howard Hellams, Bob Plunkett, Osce Self, and Brenda Williams were nominated. Elected were John Chappell, Mike Daniel, Howard Hellams, Bob Plunkett, and Brenda Williams. Ernest Willis moved to change the "School of Engineer ing" to the College of Engineering under the power of Sec tion 9 of the Student Senate Constitution. The motion was seconded by Mike Sheheen and discussion followed. The motion was passed. Charles Behling presented the following resolutions which were passed unanimously by the members of Student Senate. WHEREAS, President and Mrs. Robert L. Sumwalt have long served the students of the University of South Caro lina in a dedicated, self-giving manner, and WHEREAS, President and Mrs. Sumwalt have made great contributions to our state and nation by their capable leadership of the University and by their service in other activities, and, WHEREAS, throughout all of their activities, the Sum walts have maintained a sincere personal interest in each member of the Carolina Community and have thereby en deared themselves to each member of our Community, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED that Student Senate express its sin cere appreciation to the Sumwalts for their dedicated serv ice to the students of our University and the citizens of our state and nation, and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Student Senate ex press its regret that the Sumwalts have chosen to retire from their official leadership of the University, and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Student Senate ex press its congratulations to the Sumwalts for their many accomplishments and honors in the past, especially on the naming of the College of Engineering in President Sum walt's honor, and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this reso lution be sent to Dr. and Mrs. Sumwalt, the University News Service, and "The Gamecock." WHEREAS, the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees has chosen Dr. Thomas F. Jones as the new Presi dent of the University, and, WHEREAS, the students of the University, while re gretting the resignation of President Robert L. Sumwalt, look forward to further progress under the leadership of President Jones, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED that the University Student Senate warmly congratulate Dr. Jones upon his election as Presi dent, and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Student Senate express its confidence of continued progress under the guidance of Dr. Jones and also express its enthusiasm about the prospect of welcoming Dr. and Mrs. Jones into the Caro ina Community, and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this reso lution be sent to Dr. and Mrs. Jones, the University News Service, and "The Gamecock." The President announced that there would be only two more meetings of the 1961-1962 Student Senate. He re quested that all committee chairmen turn in their complete report for the year by the end of March. He also announced that campus-wide elections would be held on April 2. There being no further business, the meeting was ad journed. In-room phone service, which is ] expected to please the occupants, is one of the features of a new Centrex dial-in phone system to be installed by Southern Bell Tele phone and Telegraph Company in time for fall semester. In-coming local and long-dis tance calls can be dialed directly to any phone in the Centrex sys tem. There will be about 125 in terior stations for campus use only. V Centrex provides for outward 1 local calls to any telephone con iected to Southern Bell's Columbia 3 -xchange, eliminating the need for placing calls through the univer- F iity operator. Dr. Jones, who will be the Uni versity's 23rd president, was borr July 9, 1916 at Henderson, Tenn He holds a bachelor of science de gree from Mississippi State Col lege, and master of science anc doctor of science degrees fron Massachusetts Institute of Tech nology. After serving as a physicist ir underwater sound research for th< Naval R e s e a r c h Laboratory Washington, D. C., 1941-47, h< began his academic career as i member of the faculty at MIT For his naval research work, h. holds the U. S. Navy Meritoriouc Civilian Service Award. As professor of electrical engi neering at MIT, Dr. Jones was en gaged in research on missile sys tems, large-scale analog compu. ters, nuclear instrumentations, and electronics. At MIT, he was widely praised for his contribution to the development of the electrical engi neering curriculum. Since 1958, Dr. Jones was named head of the Electrical Engineering School at Purdue, and subsequently became dean. He is a special adviser to the National Science Foundation, tech nical adviser to the Daystrom Corp., and member of the boards of directors of General Electron ics Laboratories, Inc.; CP Elec tronics Co., Inc.; and lemothcrni trol Corp. Dr. Jones is also a member of the boards of directors of the In stitute of Radio Engineers, Na tional Electronics Conference and the Engineers Council for Pro fessional Development. He is i "fellow" of the Institute of Radio Engineers and editor of the Pro ceedings of IRE. Concerning his change from Purdue, Dr. Jones said, "Although P've been very happy wvith the dedication and effectiveness of the faculty her-e, and the complete backing of the administration, I feel I must rise to this challenge and give my all to it." College Show "Landscape I," by Jack Morris and "Calee," by Mary Edna Wynn, USC students, have been named Honor Paintings in the Fourth Carolina's College Art Annual, a competition co-sponsored by the Art Department of USC and the Columbia Museum of Art. Fron 105 pictures entered by art students from North and South Carolina colleges and universities, 37 were selected for the showing by a one-man jury, Tetsuo Ochi kubo, Hawaiian-American artir4., From these 317, five were chosen as Honor Paintings, each winning a prize of $25. The college show will be open free to the public in the Columbia Art Museum, corner of Senate and Bull Streets, March 18-April 8. Museum hours are Tuesday Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sun (lay. 2-6 p.m. Other USC students whose work wvill be exhibited are Pixie Foster, Warren .Johnson, Robert Jones, Pasilios Paulos, Barbara Quick, William W.
