Rare Boo
Tribute 'I
Any inquisitive Carolina studer
who ventures into the Rare Book
Room located in McKissick Librar
will find a collection of some c
the oldest, most interesting, an
most informative literary work
ever published.
Among these books is the beat
tiful edition of bird plates, painte
from nature, by Audubon. Thi
specific edition was given to th
University by a special appropriv
tion of the South Carolina legisl
ture. The passing of the measur
was due to the influence of th
Reverend Bachman, a close frien
of Audubon and his family. I
was Bachman who sent specimen
to Audubon and aided him i:
identifying the birds he painted.

t originally to the plates. Such a
s subscription cost approximately
y $976. The estimated value of the
i plates today is about $20,000. It
I is difficult to believe that the chil
s dren of University professors once
played with these rare and valu
. able artistic works.
d Originally, the first 10 plates
a were ingraved on sheets of copper.
e Audubon then transferred his
. work to London where it was coin
. pleted and retouched. It was de
cided that the finished plates were
e to be issued five at a time during
e the years 182'; to 1838. After the
j works were shipped to America
t they were brought to Columbia
from Charleston via wagon. The
s five volumes of Ornathological
i Biography supply a text for the
plates.
_ These volumes are available to
students who visit the Rare Book
Room. A thing of beauty is a joy
I forever. Be joyful. Read a book.
