The on< "Little Wednesday" is a fign position between these two te Gene Buchan took the opening kick off from Clemson and raced 95 yards for the first score. Sud denly, a black cloud passed over Death Valley, and the Cubs visual ized a long, dark day ahead. Clemson took the kick off and miade two first downs but was forced to punt. Dan Reeves started his Game cocks clucking, and with a sus tained drive, he scored the second Carolina touchdown on a one-yard plunge. Spectators arriving late were a bit amazed at the 12-0 score with only about five minutes gone. Before they had time to find their seats and get out their binoculars, the Gamecocks scored again with Reeves passing to .lohnny Wilburn on a ten-yard touchdown play. John Breedin added the finishing touches with the extra point kick. Clemson, with Jimmy Bell in the quarterback position, passed to his end Caplin for their first score. The extra point attempt was successful and the first quar ter ended with the Gamecocks leading 19-7. In the third quarter Clemson took the kick off, but was unable to move against the stout Game cock roosting position. Reeves passed to Wilburn to get the sec ond half started with a respecta ble outlook-for Carolina. Reeves attempted the extra point, but failed to score. Bell, firing up his Cubs, made a touchdown to narrow the score to 26-14. Larry Gill seemed to re sent the passing ability of the Clemson field general as he plucked a Bell pass from the air and eluded his opponents for a 60-yard scoring play. Breedin climaxed the Carolina scoring rally with his second extra point of the afternoon. Looking at the statistics of the game, one would think that the teams were of equal strength. Carolina totaled 314 yards for the afternoon to Clemson's 267. Caro lina controlled the ball most of the game, but when the Clemson quarterback, Bell, got his hands on the ball, it was like the bombing of London. Ho completed 18 of 31 passes that he attempted, but had five of them intercepted. Clemson bettered Carolina in the fi rst downs department getting 1 7 to Carolina's 13. Clemson lost five fumbles and Carolina two. The entire freshman team wvas praised for their outstanding per tormance, but Dan Reeves, the 01, 188-lb. quarterback from Amiericus, G;a., could be singled out for his achievement, lHe gained 119 yards for an average of 9.1 yards per carry.
