Carolina Studen The regular meeting of the Student Senate was called to orde by President John Chappell. The roll was called and the minute were approved as read. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Student Speaker's Bureau: Mike Sheheen, Chairman of the Stu dent Speakers Bureau presented the following report: The Studen Speaker's Bureau met on Friday, September 29, 1961, to discuss th( purpose of the Bureau. Those present were reminded that the Bureat was set up under the auspices of Student Government. The purpose was explained as a bureau of Carolina studentE serving as good will ambassadors for the school. The Bureau is ti promote the better interests and welfare of the University. To d( this, the Bureau will carry on an organized program of public educa tion, in order to create a statewide interest in the Carolina Com munity. Members of the Bureau were reminded that participation waE voluntary, and all expenses incurred in delivering talks to the variou: groups around the state were to be covered by the individuals. A statewide publicity campaign was announced, and steps were taken to execute the campaign. A requested budget of $325 was sen to President Chappell and Treasurer lellams. The budget was t< cover the expenses in announcing the Bureau to the people of the state. The campaign will consist of a promotional letter to the parents of all Carolina students, announcing the Bureau, its purpose, and its desire to speak in clubs around the state. We hope to reach many clubs in various towns and counties by this letter, since many of our parents hold positions in those clubs. The cost of the publicity is as follows: 6.000 letters, printed and folded $ 50.00 600 Student Government envelopes 65.00 IBM gum labels of names and addresses 50.00 Postage for 6,000 letters 240.00 Follow-up postage for confirmation of engagements 20.00 TOTAL $325.00 Though this may seem as a substantial amount, we realize that an effective program of promoting the Bureau must be (lone before the student speakers can go into action. The approval of the Student Government is all that is needed before the promotional campaign is put into process. The Bureau also asks each Senator to do as much as possible toward attaining speaking engagements in their home towns and counties. The program, we feel, will yield effective results in cultivating an interest in the progress of the University. State Student Legislature Report: Jimmy Truesdale, Chairman o the Carolina delegation to the State Student Legislature, announced that an election of the delegates to the House of Representatives and the Senate would be held later in the meeting. Artists Series Committee: Tim Quinn, chairman, presented this report: During the sunimer, letters of information about the Artists Series were sent to all incoming new students. The response to these letters was very good and there was quite a lot of interest created. The Artists Series Committee will have its first meeting Thursday, October 5, 1961 in the Russell House Cafeteria at 5:00 P.M. The Artists Series Presentations for the year 1961-62 are: 1. October 17, the Netherland's String Quartette 2. December 7, the Columbus Boys' Choir :3. February 1.1, the National Symphony Orchestra .1. April 10, the Don Cossack Singers and Dancers OLD BUSINESS: Brenda Williams, secretary, read a letter of appreciation from Coach Marvin Bass to the Student Senate expressing his appreciation for the support the students have given the football team. The approval of the Student Senate was shown by their applause. NEW BUSINESS: President Chappell made the following committee appointments: Flag Lowering Committee: Chairman. Mike Daniel; Homecoming Committee, Mike Brown; Chaplain, Todd Walter; Artists Series, Linda Leifferman, Haskell Toporek, and Jim Pressley. President Chappell announced that the WUSC Committee Report would be turned over to the Student Activities Committee chairman, Jack Wilson asked if the additional allocation sought by WUSC would be above its present allocation. Hill Wood said that if WUSC received additional allocation, which it would have to have, it would he able to get advertising to help pay the expenses. Bill Wilson asked if money could be borrowed from the administration to make the necessary improvements. le moved that the committee investi gate the possibility of borrowing the necessary appropriations to expand WUSC from the administration, providing it be repaid as soon as possible. Ken Holland asked why the money couldn't be paid back by revenue from WUSC advertising. lie made an amendment to Senator Wilson's motion. The amendment reads: I move that the WUSC Committee Report be turned back over to the WUSC Com mittee, and that the committee investigate the possibility of getting a loan from the administration to be paid back by revenue from WUSC advertising. This motion and amendment were accepted by the Student Senate. A discussion of the report of the Drama Committee was held, This report was accepted. The Student Speakers Bureau report was accepted unanimously.
