It's Just for The BIrds BY DOUG GRAY Sports Editor In lo(king bac'k ovtzr the year, this column finds that the itramural depart ment has made great strides. We can enombler when practically no independent teams partici patd, Oecau.e there was no specific plan to take care of he non-gretks. But., w can't say that now, for a program has been set p, 4nd it is a good one. The intramural department is headed b v Weems Maskin, track coach, and he has two excellent assistants, Holbrook Platts, and )av-id Keller. 'Ili dopa' Ine-nit set. up twelve zones last fall, and each .on"V! ed a captain to lc-ad their respective clubs. This was a good move because in the past, the independents had ha1 no organization, and the results were no cooperation. Now each zone gets full cooperation, sometime more so: than the fraternities. Basketball for instance, was won by Zone 6. who defeated Sigma Nu for the campus champion ship. We would say that if that zone had not been set up, t hen all of that good talent which produced the champion ship club would have been literally untouched. At this writing, the intramural department is setting up the sotball finals, which will be played next week. Alko, the track events were held WVednesday. Every time a sport like this is played, there is a lot of work that is dlone that no one knows about. They have to set up the schedules, procure a place to present them, and take care of all of the equipment that is used. All in all, it is a tedious job and requires numerous hours of hard work. Thus, this column would like to com mend the department on the great job done this year and sincerely hopes that it will continue to grow as it has done in the past. WE DON'T UNDERSTAN) When a college student accepts a scholarship to play a sport at an institution, he also accepts the responsibility of upholding the name of his sciool and the world of sports. We don't quite understand how a student can get in iVoed in the recent point shaving episodes. A lot of reasons have been given for their taken action. Some say that they need the money, others say that they accepted but didn't actually participate in the scandals. There was one player in which we were sorry to read; where he had been involved in this nation-wide scandal. le is )oug Moe. This All-American for the University of North Carolina didn't shave points, so he says, but he did accept a small sum from the gamblers and did not report it to the proper officials. Moe is now out of school and the professional basketball team that had dilafted him is dubious as to whether he will go straight from now on. Ilis career is practically ruined and what did it was a mere $75. We don't understand it. TYPICAL CLEMSON It. is reported that IPTAY is having a jamboree for all of the Richland an(d Lexingtoii county supporters. This organization is composed of Clemson supportters who pay ten d(ollars a year to help out the athletic prliogriams. At this jamboree, a prize has beeii set, up to make the meeting a little gayer and to driaw a few more people. We don't knoxw what the prize is, but we (o know what a person has it) do to get it-wear the lmudest sport shirt. Ot Fishing I fr Salnon eggs are as fine a trout 1" bait as can be found, so say many til anglers. Sometimes, though, they arl'e soft and have a tendency to fall off the hook. Don't switch to " another kind of bait, simply try so this: Remove the eggs from the 1 jar and set them out to dry for a ciuple of days. This makes them a tough and they'll cling to your u hook until Mr. Trout comes along. ( If you over-dry them and the eggs f 4 hevone too hard, return them to the juice in the jar and they will soften up again. Here's a tip for do-it-yourself- ie ers. A good homemade dry fly he dope is easily devised by shaving sh paraffin into a small jar of gaso- %i line. Shake well, and you'll have hu a mixture that will float any type sh of fy. he it dry or wet. The paraf- hI fin is the floating secret. By add- ho ing additional amounts you can almost float a bare hook. tie Many anglers like to eat fish of as well as to catch them.
