It's Just for The B'irds BY CARROLL GRAY Leaving the hallowed grounds of Carolina last Satur lay morning, yours truly journeyed to the foothills and cow pasitures of our restful state to witness Clemson's idea of spring football practice. After borrowing a pair of bmafms and a straw hat, I felt right at home among th< 0 "rlnd.s aid neighbors" that had gathered for the - ,taion. ll hoedown got underway at 3 o'clock in pleasant 0dc. ree ,.-oather <id before a crowd of approximately 6.- 0 ',Uns 'and spies). 'ihe :net i0n started slowly, in typical Clemson fashion, as both squads looked sluggish and listless. As the licks pi.ressed from taps to knocks, as they always will, a bit tt IXp was noticed in the line . . . especially from the ends. 'hroughout the game, the interior line looked like a big ar of wintertime molasses. Mammoth tackles Ronnie Os horne (278 lbs. and 40-plus around the waist), Jimmy King (267 lbs.) and Charlie Evans (245 lbs.) appeared to have Ieal power straight ahead but the only tackle on the field to play a good latteral game was rising soph. Vic Aliffi (225 lbs.). It would be no surprise to this writer if Aliffi was on the first unit before opening game next fall. The end situation, even with the switch of Gary Barnes to halfback, looked strong. Rising sophs Bob Poole (6-4, 205 lbs.) and Lou Fogle (6-3, 200 lbs.) combine with vets Ronnie Crolley, Coleman Glase, and Tommy King to give needed depth. The guard position appeared weak. Calvin West (195 lbs.) and Tommy Gue (185 lbs.) get sonic help from sophs Walter Cox (195 lbs.) and Clark Gaston (210 lbs.) Unless Howard can uncover something new, he'll be hurting here. Ron Andreo, team co-captain for 1961, and Jack Veronne appear to have the center position filled. Below these two, the ranks thin rapidly as sophs take over. Joe Anderson, the 6 foot 41,-2-inch, 200 lb. junior quarter back, performed in top form, displaying a coolness that is rarely seen. For example, with one second left in the first half, Anderson rolled out, and hit Gary Barnes on a 38-yard tmichdown pass. This combination is dangerous. Playing a Jim-up game for the White team at (luarterback was rising soph Jim Parker. Parker appears to have "what it takes" to play ACC football as his twelve pass completions kept the outmanned White team in the game. Ron Scrudato, Orange fullback, was hard to stop all day. Seldom held to fewer than five yards the senior back showed exceptional punch. Workhorse Wendall Black was the strongest runner on the field at halfback. Black was equalized, to a degree, by Mack Matthews of the Whites, as Matthews showed good s)eed on several occasions. Possibly the biggest plum Cousin Frank can ogle is the smooth switch Gary Barnes made from end to halfback. Barnes, running strictly from a slot forma tior. posed a continual threat to the White team as Ander son found him as wide open as a Mexican cantina through out the afternoon. ass igns Another ""^"' idI" Prepper CLEAN I Hea; d Coach Marvin Bass an unctied Tuesd'ay that Carolina (.LQ Sfdn A has signe:d ano, ther fleet-footed halfIback to add to his9 already bulging list of swift backs. Davidson C Needs Supp A grave situation has arisen at Davidson College in North Caro lina which calls for the united support of neighboring Southern colleges and sympathetic students in other areas of our great nation. Not since the Japanese Student Riots of the summer of 1960 has such an appealing cause arisen on a college campus. The Davidson College Executive Committee has found it necessary to restrict Mr. David N. Dakin, a talented young soccer player, to this campus for a two-week period for his irresponsible failure last November to return an athletic supporter belonging to the Col lege. The delay in the Committee's action has been attributed to the lengthy deliberation required for so serious and costly a matter. Immediate action has been taken by the Class of '62, and the "David Dakin Jockey Fund" was founded at Davidson on April 27, 1961, to defray the losses sus tained by the College at the end LDTHES SERVICE Out By 5 YOU'RE ROUNDED BY...
