Steven BY DOUG GRAY Sportb Editor "I feel good about playing N. C State in the first round. They ar4 tough on their home court, an< we will have to play them latei on in the tournament anyway, si why not take 'em in the firs round ?" This quote came from the ver able and personable Bob StevenE head basketball coach for th, Gamecocks. He wasn't being funn: or satiracal when he said it. H, meant it, and it paid off. Stevens has been issuing quote: like this ever since he embarkeo upon our campus. One of his mos famous ones, "North Carolini oesn't scare me a bit," was com pletely ignored by the newspapers They looked at it and chuckle< under their breath. But when the read the score that night afte: the game, everyone went back an looked up his quote and blaste< it on their pages. Before the Gamecocks left fo: Raleigh ist week, Stevens wa: quoted, "We'll leave Columbij Campi As the Intramural basketbal season rapidly comes to an end tournament time begins on cam pus. Press Mavarich, the basketball mentor at Clemson College, said that Stevens was crazy for saying such things. He felt differently about this man after the Birds had downed the Wolfpack in the first roumd. All of this boils down to one thing-he is optimistic, but is a , confident optimist. It has rubbed off on his boys, and even though he didn't win the ACC tourney, he - sure scared the devil out of 'em i before his spirited club lost in the semi-finals. Carolina drew N. C. State in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament in Raleigh last week, and put on t what many consider the best show during the three-day event. The Birds fought hard as usual, and by keeping their morale i high and their desire in the clouds, they pulled off one of r the bigger upsets of the col l legiate world, with the excep tion of their victory over the Tar Heels several weeks back. r They were ranked sixth in the nation at that time.
