In the first meet of the season, the Gaiecock runners ran the Georgia Tech squad to death in Atlanta, beating them 26-29. In c r. s s country competition, the team with the lowest number of total points is declared the winner of the meet. Coach Weems Baskin's troops also won the second meet they en tvred. this one in Winston-Salem against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The score of the meet was 21-3 1, with the Gamecocks on the long end of the horn. thuke was Carolina team's third victim as the Blue Devils went down 2-1-33. USC's Bob Thorne was first over the finish line, with la time of 17 minutes, 33 seconds for a three and five-tenths mile course at the Rex Enright Ath letic Center. The Gamecocks Paul Masem, who placed third in the ACC meet at Duke last year, fin ished second in the Duke contest. .john P1falzgraf, who showed up well for the Carolina track team last spring, came in fourth, fol lowed by Scotti Ward in fifth. Ward, an outstanding sophomore basketball hopeful, headed for a tilrve-hour cage session after the net. Tenth position was also Carolina's as Dave Larson, a fast miler from Florida, also placed. Duke's closest participant was Frank Campbell, who garnered third plice behind Thorne and Pfalzgraf. The Bird's next meet is this i1fternooln in Raleigh Where they will Iarticipate in a triangular meet wit h Clemson and N. C. State. Stevens Instrum Carolina basketball coach Bob S of his quick-break offense to a trio t help of freshman coach Gordoii St right, Art Whismant, Bud Croniin, juniors and will be vital factors in effort this season. Checkin' TJ When the Gamecocks host North Carolina's Tar Heels tomorrow, it i will mark the 36th meeting of the " !two schools. South Carolina has a long way to go before they catch up with the Tar Heels, as the lat ter team has won 25 of the con tests, while losing only six. Four tilts have ended in ties. The Gamecocks are also behind in recent games, as they have won only two in the past ten years. The last USC win came in 1956, Warren Giese's first year as ihead coach, wihen the Birds won d 14-0. ) The Tars won last year, 19-6, 0 and entled a five-game Winning n streak for the Gamecocks. This I was the game in which Steve Kopian, stellar USC halfback, re- 1 ceived his bad knee injury that g kept him out of action for the 1 rest of the season. s, The series began in 1903, when s the Tar Heels won 17-0, and it was s twelve long gaies before the USC forces could muster a vic- a tory. That came in 1924, as the s Gamecocks f i n a I 1 y triumphed, h 10-7. That was one of Carolina's b better years, as they posted a 7-3 C record, including wins over Clem- I son, The Citadel, Wake Forest, n and N. C. State. 11 North Carolina's largest victory 1) margin came in 1914, when the SCOIe read UNC 48-USC 0. They i: followed this up in 1929 with a 10-0 win. On the other hand, the L Birds' best score to (late has been T 18-0, when Johnny Gramling and t. Company led the way to victory in 1953. It is interesting to note thatt (Carol ina's overall strength has 'ii niever e<(jualled that of the Tar > IIleels, as the Birds have never a won when UNC' had a winning season. c Also, Carolina has scoredl 219 F Points th rouighouit the series, while n he North (Carolinians have gottent 517.
