Dr. Irene Dillard Elliott and Dr. Arney R. Childs both served as USC t dean of women. The portraits were a painted by William F. Draper of New York and were given to the University by Dr. Donald S. Rus- % sell, former president of USC, and t Mrs. Russell. Dr. Elliott is a member of the english department faculty, well known for her "Great Books" course. She was dean of women at Caro lina for more than 20 years and was also a member of the history faculty. Dr. Childs has published, through the facilities of USC Press, four volumes of letters and journals ofr prominent South Carolinians. She has served with the S. C. Historical Assn., first as treasurer and then as editor of its "Proceedings." In 1853 only 11 seniors were graduated from South Carolina College, the smallest class since 1823. The small size was the result of 108 students leaving the cam pus because they didn't like the college system for serving food to the students.
