'Clemson Strong'
Says Coach Giese
"This Clemson team is as experi
enced as any they have had," Coach
Warren Giese said discussing the
"Big Thursday" game. "Clemson
has the strongest personnel of any
team in the (Atlantic Coast) Con
ference." They have two good
quarterbacks and a veteran back
field, two deep."
"I think Clemson will use some
thing different against us," Giese
related. "We are trying to fill gap
ing holes made by injuries. "Six
men have been moved up to the
second team because of injuries
since the season began."
Twenty men on the Gamecock
team will see action for their first
Clemson-Carolina affair. There are
26 sophomores and juniors on the
top three teams.

."Let's finish well what we
started" might easily be the battle
cry for this last Big Thursday
game. It seems the University of
South Carolina won the first
Clemson tussle, in 1896, by a score
of 12 to 6. Now, 63 years later,
let's end the series with a smash
ing victory over our poor cousins
from the northern hills.
. . . Stephen Michael Kopian, a
casualty from the UNC game at
Chapel Hill, has returned to cam
pus from the Columbia Hospital,
where he underwent surgery for
a knee injury. Halfback Kopian
will be out for the rest of the
season, thus cutting short what
was a promising senior year for
the Glen Cove, New Yorker.
The Dixie Legion
... Someone gave the frosh basket
ball squad a nickname, in jest to!
be sure, that might stick. Due to
the dominant majority of Yankees
on the team, it was thought a
good name for the first-year
cagers would be "The Dixie Le
gion." On scholarship are Jim Col
lins, Bob Haney, Ron Maynard,
Jim Miller, Dave Prevoznik, Bob
Swenson, and Scotty Ward.
. . . Everett Nevman is reported
to have turned down a handsome
pro-baseball contract to return to
USC for his education. "Choo
Choo," as Everett is known on
campus, is likely to not only star
from the dlianmond this spring,
but should see action from the
eage hardwoods as wvell. "Choo
Choo"' is a pledge of Sigma Phi
Epsilon.

Maxcy parlayed the deft pass,ing

three second half touchdowns to

was a student at Wisconsin State
College, where he was an end on
the football team, and in 1948 he
attended Central Michigan College
where he shifted to right halfback.
Rex Enright Stadium
. . "The Gamecock" in its edi
torial columns urges that the Car
olina Stadium be named for our
beloved Director of Athletics, Rex
Enright. This would be a great
honor for a truly great gentleman
who has served this institution,
this state, and the young men of
Carolina for the better part of his
life. This columnist joins with the
editor in urging the students, the
administration, and the board of
trustees to name the stadium THE
REX ENRIGHT STADIUM.
Praises Stevens
. Bud Cronin, a forward on last
year's frosh cage team, has high
words of praise for Coach Stevens
conditioning program. Most cagers
usually run from 5 to 7 miles in
the average basketball game, but
when those miles are transferred
to a track on Davis Field, it
seems longer-longer-longer.
. . . Head Coach Warren Giese,
in a TV appearance on October
18, stated he would like to win
this Big Thursday game like no
other game he has ever coached.
We're with you, coach, and we'll

Tough Foes
Still Ahead
For Birds
Some stiff competition remains
for the Gamecocks after the' "Big
Thursday" battle. Four conifer
ence opponents are to be met and
conquered if the Gamecocks are
to regain national prestige. Miami
furnishes the fifth test for the
Carolina footballers.

October 31 to test the Gamecock
defense against the explosive "I"
formation. Maryland began this
season with a victory over West
Virginia; then they lost three
games to Texas, Syracuse, and
Wake Forest. Saturday, the Terps
dropped North Carolina 14-6 in
an upset. The Tar Heels pre
viously enled the Gamecocks' win
ning streak at seven games.
On November 7, the Game
cocks journey to Charlottesville,
to meet Virginia's Cavaliers. The
Virginians, coached by Dick Voris,
have lost 13 in a row. The last
time they won was in the second
game last season against Duke.
Florida Sun
On November 13, the Game
cocks journey to Florida for a
taste of summer in the midst of
the cold weather. MiAmi furnishes
the opposition in the Orange Bowl
Stadium. The Hurricanes, appar
ently underrated by pre-season
experts, have won three of four
games this year. The latest vic
tory wvas over Navy 33-8.
The final game of the year will
find the Gamecocks meeting Wake
Forest in Charlotte. The Deacons
have wvon four of five contests,
includ ing three conference vic
tories.

the University of South Carolina

Clemson tonight at 8 o'clock in

A crowd of 15,000 is expected
to be on hand for the last
game of this traditional rivalry,
featuring two unbeaten fresh

over Maryland and N. C. State,

Louis DiMuzio.
The Cubs will give Carolina a
chance to prove its defense both
on the ground and through the

is always a threat to throw, while
fullback Bill McGuirt has lived up
to his nickname, "Mule Train,"
through his overland prowess.
The massive Clemson line,
which resembles the varsity for

Both coaches have praised their
respective squads for their fine

Berry has his forces ready to
