By BOBBY ALFORD Defeat is a harsh sounding word; it ranks in the grating category with chaos and destruction. Defeat is comm9nplace and yet we are never ready for it. Only the very -young and foolish believe that it is preventable and avoidable. Every venture which ended in defeat began as a planned success. Football teams are part of these planned successes; and yet, as we are all aware, meet with defeat. Defeat is seldom final, it is temporary; today's defeat may well become to morrow's pot of gold. If we experience nothing but success, we become proud and thankless, but in defeat we are humble and hopeful. From defeat we learn, we see the flaws and strive to correct them. Many times the eraser wears out before the pencil; but as we fill in the erasures we learn something, however small it might be. The Gamecocks were soundly defeated by North Carolina. The Tar Heels found the weak link in our football chain and kept tugging away until the chain stretched. It only stretched, it didn't break. Now, the Gamecock coaches will begin to mend the weak link, to shore up the soft spot, and once again the defeated team will become victorious. One fly in the icing does iot spoil the cake; and the Gamecocks are not going to allow one loss spoil the season. It was a bitter loss for the Gamecock players. The seniors on this team have suffered three consecutive losses to the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill. At present, the excellent football men of Carolina have taken their deflated pride to the prac tice field and are preparing for Clemson and six straight vic tories to close out their best season in the history of the University. The battle of the Carolinas provided further evidence that the ACC is one of the best balanced football leagues in the country. Five teams are still in the thick of battle for this year's championship. The fight will probably go right down to the final day of the season. Congratulations are in order for coach Jesse Berry and the freshman football team. The Baby Birds have won their first two games of the season with fine efforts against Maryland and N. C. State. It might just have been that the Gamecocks beat "hell out of Tar Heels" (as the cheer leaders urged) considering the inspired football North Carolina played.
