Pep Club Sponsors Rally At 6 Carolina Gamecocks were off to a roaring start when approxi mately 1,000 students turned out for the first Pep Rally of the sea son. Freshmen showed overwhelming response by turning up In large numbers to learn Carolina cheers at the Vield House Tuesday night according to Jimmy Truesdale, president of the Pep Club. The rally, sponsored by the Pep Club, got under way with a wel come to the freshmen and intro duction of the cheerleaders. Carolina's new band was also on hand to lend support to the cheers. A second pep rally, also spon sored by the Pep Club, will take place tonight in the rear of the new library at 6:00. Both the band and majorettes will be on hand. Truesdale also mentioned a special surprise which is planned for the rally. The freshmen, he said, are re quired to wear their "rat hats" at all times and to the Duke game. Interest shown by the freshmen is to be commended, Truesdale said. Approximately over 800 rat hats have been sold. Campus Briefs Euphradian Society On Tuesday evening, September 22, the Euphradian Society will begin its fall semester sessions at 7 p.m. in the hall, third floor of Harper College. The sophomore "Y" will meet Monday, September 21, at 1 p.m.; and the junior-senior "Y"' will meet Wednesday, September 23, at 1 p.m. in Russell House auditorium, it has been announced. * * * WUSC-AM Meeting A mneeting of the WUSC-AM staff will be held today at 5 p.m. in Room 204, Russell House. Gordon Belser, Columbia at torney, has presented a deed to 6.84 acres of land in the Sherwood Forest section of Columbia to the University, Dr. J. T. Penney, head of the biology department, has said. The land will be used as a na tural preserve of plant life and as a wildlife sanctuary. Students of the biology department will take field trips in the area, Penney added. Locat ion The wooded tract is hounded by Bloomwood Road on the north at its intersection with Blossom Street, and has a frontage of ap proximately 400 feet on Wilmot Avenue on the south. 'Gamecock' Publication Dates Given Publication dates for the fall issues of The Gamecock will be as follows: September 18, 25; October 2, 9, 16, 21, 30; November 6, 13, 20, 25; December 4, 11, 18; and January 8 and 15. All material for society and feature pages must be in the of fice by 5 p.m. on Monday of the week the article is to appear. E. Giles of the School of Educa tion, has said. Dr. Giles will be the director of the new division. Trustees' Approval The Board of Trustees approved the division as a service to students who have been in residence for a degree in any of the schools or departments of the University, and to students transferring from other institutions who do not show ap- i titude for the school of their choice. "Many students enter institu- I tions of higher learning without definite plans for their life's work," President R. E. Sumwalt said. "Others succumb to various pressures and begin work toward academic degrees for which they have insufficient liking, aptitude, or preparation. The Division of Unclassified Students will assist, those who find themselves in such I circumstances to redirect their ef- S forts into more appropriate aca demic channels." Policy Committee The committee which will estab lish policies for the division is com posed of Dr. R. D. Ochs, professor of history, chairman; Dr. B. L.
