A THINKING MAN'S~55 B MAN'S TASTE! 1sl 0 The PRESSBOX By CHARLIE BRADLEY Sports Editor The. ranks of the national Basketball Association know something that broadcasters and sports publicists through out the Atlantic Coast Conference don't. Basketball expert and ex-pro great Chuck Taylor made a statement to the press in which he stated that the Gamecocks' Cookie Pericola was the best professional prospect in the ACC. Chuck Eckman, former coach of the Fort Wayne Pistons, and an official in the recent ACC Tournament at Raleigh, N. C., said that he was very impressed with the Union City, N. J., senior and added that Cookie's chances for making the grade were excellent. "He was the best man on the floor tonight," said Eckman as he left Press Row for the dressing room prior to calling the Maryland, Virginia clash. Yet in spite of the recognition afforded Cookie, he was completely overlooked when it came time to select all con ference and all Tournament teams. Who's to blame for the over-shadowing of South Carolina's sports personalities? The disgusting fact is that it is our own Sandlapping Press. Petty arguments between sports figures on the South State's scene virtually split what little chances we have of gaining national recognition for our athletes. In a recent conversation I learned the sad fact that there are only a handful of representatives from the Palmetto State in the Atlantic Coast Sportswriters Assdciation. In comparison, the number from the Tar Heel State is astronom ical-just too many to count on the fingers and toes of a large gathering of people. To be a member of the above-mentioned association one must first, be a sportswriter for a newspaper, a radio-tele vision broadcaster, or a.sports publicist in any of the four states represented in the Conference plus the District of Columbia; and second,-pay a paltry fee of $5.00 which is generally paid by the member's employer anyway. So, the blame for the plight of USC personages in the field of athletics lies within the press of our state. And until these journalists, broadcasters, and public relations men get on the band wagon, athletes and coaches from the Southern sector of the ACC will be handicapped with obscurity with no chance at all for deserved recognition, conference or national wise.
