Efco HF.81 One of the best stereo do-it yourself kits on the market is the Eico HF-81. This is a completely self-contained stereo control cen ter. The HF-81 has two separate 14 watt amplifiers for stereo sounds, with the unique feature that when you desire to play monaural (ordinary LP's) rec ords you simply flip a switch and both channels merge into one 28 watt monaural amplifier, giving you the same output in both of your speakers. Speakers This brings us to the center of any sound system, the speakers, which change minute voltage im pulses into good, clear, audible sounds. The best amplifier in the world will do you no good, if you have low-quality speakers. Cash Ouday Let us consider the cost in volved to reach this point. The HF-81 kit costs $69.95, or $109.95 if you desire to have it wired at the factory (in case you don't trust yourself with a soldering iron). The s p e a k e r system costs $39.95 and two are needed, for each sound channel. Thus, the total cost is either $149.85 or $189.95 depending on the control system option that is chosen. Sound Source The time has come to produce "sounds." In order to do so a sound source is necessary. There are three options, any one or all may be used. With the daily increasing amount of stereophonic LP's available on the market, a record turntable is now the most com mon source, followed closely by the stereo tape recorder and lastly the AM-FM Tuner. The latter system, however, re quires simultaneous broadcast by a radio station and stations doing this are still few and far in be tween. Turn Table So to complete the basic sys tem, a Garrard RD-121 turntable plus some good stereo records will adequately handle the source needs. The basic price of the RC 121 is $49.95 plus about five dol lars for the wooden base. A r-P zapphire cartridge is available for a very low price but the recommended cartridge is the GE diamond which sells for ap proximately $24. Basically then, a homemade Hi-Fi can be purchased and as sembled for a little over $200. This system will give even the most ardent audiophile a satis factory sound system. Audio Philes For those who care to enter a little deeper into the never end ing list of things-that-can-be bought-to-improve-your-hi-fi-sys tem, there are AM-FM Tuners, Tape Recorders, Radio Transmit ters and Receivers, Attenuaters, M a n iza I TurntAlibles, Feather weight pick-up arms, etc., et. al. In the next article we will cover ready made components, and complete stereo tape record ing systems. The second movement was tan tamount to the first in possessing its performers as well as the audience. The beautiful opening theme, played by the English horn and harp provided the sub stance for the remainder of the movement. The finale brought the master piece to a gratifying close. Truly this performance is to be remem bered. Prelude Successful The prelude to "The Afternoon of a Faun" was successful in de picting a young Fawn as he awakes in the forest. Debussy proves with this worj that he is the true master the impres sionistic composers. The orchestra under the baton of Ormandy, gave clear defini tion to the phrasings of the com position, with the flute taking top solo honors. For the music ]over that pre fers modern tonal music, the suite from "The Firebird" was a de light. Stravinsky utilizes every istrument in the orchestra and the technical demands upon the performers are brass and wind instrume'nts, backed up by the percussion, and the strings. C:omplete Evening Schumann's "Dance of the Nymphs and Satyrs" brought to a close, a thoroughly complete evening of music. This light, gay, scherzo was executed to perfec tion and sent the listener home in a daze of absolute satisfaction. With the lowering of the house lights and the appearance of maestro Ormandy, the scene was set for an evening of perfect lis tening. Music for Radio, "Saga of the Prairie" by Copland, blended strings and brass to create a panorama of majestic beauty found only in the natural wonder of the prairie. The technical dis play by the French horn and first violins gave unusual vitality and fireworks to the composition. Hypnotic and Captivating The listener often found him self moved into a feeling of com passion under the hypnotic and captivating melodies of the Franck D m i n o r symphony.
