SAUNDERS SCORES ... Fullbae a 26-yard run that added 6 more Saidnders boosted his rushing tot an average of 5.5 yards per carry Bird Cage With Intre By Bill Dunne Sports Writer Coach Walt Hambrick's basket ball team opened the season last Tuesday night with an intra-squad scrimmage in the Field house. Coach Pleased Coach Hambrick seemed fairly pleased with the scrimmage. His two main comments on the scrim mage were that the ball playing in general looked pretty good but that the shooting looked terrib!e. One of the reasons that the shooting was bad was there seemed to be a lack of opportunities for good shots, another was that the team had been concentrating heavily on defense in practice. Fred Lentz's shoulder looked to be in very good shape and he was in under the basket hustling quite well, Melvin Quick looked very good in his shooting and Bob Franz was out standing on his rebounding. There were several players who by this time of the season should be in shape but were dragging before the scrimmage was fifteen minutes old. Mike Callahan was two to three sedonds behind most of the fast break plays, while the Hudson brothers appeared to be determined to put each other out of business. The burn was the result of a domestic accident. The team appeared to have the will to win and the desire to play ball. Last night's scrimmage be tween the varsity and the fresh men went a long way towards pointing- out the possible starters in the regular season's games. The crowds at the scrimmage left a lot to be desired. It is esti mated that about 300 studenta and guests watched the varsity scrim mage. This means that some 4,700 and more students had something else to do or somewhere else to go. The Gamecocks, who meet North Carolina State here tomorrow afternoon in an effort to -improve on a 5-3 won-lost record, have been getting tremendous mileage out of quarterback Bobby Bunch, half backs Alex Hawkins and King Dixon and fullback John Saunders. Opposition Tough In going up against tough oppo sition week after week, including three opponents that have been ranked among the top 11 in the nation, South* Carolina's starting backfield has accounted for 1,513 of the team's total of 1,952 yards and scored 106 of the 182 points. Bunch Game Back Strong Bunch, out of action after the fourth game last year because of a shoulder injury, has come back strung this year. His play selec tion has been excellent, he has run well when the occasions have arisen, and his passing has been adequate in key situations. For example, against Clemson Bunch stuck to the ground, run ning often himself, but when the occasion called for it, he fired a 26-yard pass to end Buddy May field to set-up the score that launched USC to a 26-6 win. Hawkins, a great defensive back, has run, passed and received like a true All-American. In all he has handled the ball 112 times this year on all types of plays and moved it 784 yards toward oppos ing goals for an average of 7.0. Dixon has been a steady per former in all phases, running well, doing most of the punting and turning in fine defensive play. Saunders, the 205-pounder from Churchland, Va., has been tht sur prise back of the Atlantic Coast Conference. His 528 yards rushing is second best in the league, and he is a real threat for the No. 1 position. t ivor! ste! You oan Slight either ends as lto~ owerder und and shAl MasUb&etbvoss 0l I.. "Betty always rushes the Team Could Post One Of" Best Records The 1958 Carolina football team could establish a claim as one of the best, if not the best, in the his tory of the school by defeating North Carolina State here tomor row afternoon and Wake Forest on Thanksgiving Day. Last weekend's 28-14 win over Virginia gave the Gameaeks -a record of five wins and three losses, and that mark could be im proved to 7-3. Such an accomplish ment would rate comparison to the 1953 team and the 1966 squad, both of which had 7-8 readings against tough opposition. Five Wins Victories this year over Duke, Georgia, Clemson, Furman and Virginia, and losses to Army, North Carolina and Maryland have seen the Gamecocks turn in hard-hitting performances. Army confused the Gamecocks with a new offense and won han dily, but North Carolina barely squeezed by the Gamecocks, 6-0, and Maryland was handed its touchdown by a bad center snap at the Gamecock two-yard line in a 10-6 win.
