Although the Gamecocks have had the hex on the Cavaliers for the past six seasons, the two schools have won eight games each during a rivalry that started back in 1912. Virginia was holding a commanding lead after a 28-27 win in 1951, but then the chips started falling in the Gamecocks' favor. Winning Streak Began In '52 In 1952 at Norfolk, Va., South Carolina roared back from a 14-0 fourth-quarter deficit, scored three touchdowns while only 1:45 elapsed on the clock, and won by a 21-14 score. That started a six-game streak for the Gamecocks, who topped Virginia, 13-0, at Char lottesville, Va. last season. Most of the USC-Virginia games have taken place in the Old Do minion State, and this year's ap pearance of the Cavaliers in Co lumbia is only their second since World War II. They lost a 27-0 decision her In 1954. Birds Favorite The Gamecocks will rate the favorite again this year, although the Cavaliers have demonstrated that they can be dangerous. They upset Duke earlier in the season and lost a close, 20-15, decision to Clemson. South Carolina enters Saturday's game with a 4-3 record and a chance to compile an outstanding season by winning its final three contests. Individual Prestige In the Virginia game there will also be some individual prestige at stake. South Carolina halfback Alex Hawkins Is making his stretch drive toward possible All-America and all-conference honors, And Gamecock fullback John Saunders is a strong contender for A.C.C. rushing laurels. Siunders has gained 412 yards and averaged 4.9 per try. Two Gamecock linemen, tackle Ed Pitts and guard Jake Bodkin, are also in the all-conference pic ture. Virginia quarterback A r n o 1 d Dempsey is a contender for the league passing title after taking over for the injured Reece Whit ley. There is a possibility that Whitley will see some action against Carolina this weekend. Carolina's Gamecocks have par ticipated in only one post-season bowl game. That was in 1946 in the Gator Bowl game at Jackson ville, Florida, where they lost a 26-14 verdict to Wake Forest. Johnny McMillau, a wartime re placement for Rex Enright, was coach of the Gamecocks. The, play of Junior tickle Ed Pitts of Clinton has been a high spot of the University of South Carolina line performances this tall. A 215-pounder, Pitts has the unanimous respect of the Game 2ock players as one of the hard est hitting linemen they've en mountered. E ARMS SHOP ,W CAMPUS MS BUILDING adleton Sts.
