MUSIC NOTES The Kremlin ( But Cool Cats 'By DAVE BLEDSOE Music Analyst The scene is in a dark base ment, from a crude tape recorder comes sounds of Louie Armstrong. The sound has the unmistakable "wash" of a short-wave broad cast, but the music is audible and intelligible. With the greatest care, the men feed the input of the tape into a disc'-cutting machine built from a black-pMarket radio. Slowly the needle makes the grooves-the men watch. Finally, bhe record is complete, no words are spoken as it is placed on a wind-up gramophone. With a flat sound, reminiscent of the records found in Grandma's attic, the high notes of a wallin' trumpet come from the little speaker. - Street Scene Hours later, a nervous figure waits on a street corner. No one is in sight as a casual passer by stops by the person waiting. There is a quick flare of a match as a cigrette is lit. To one not aware of what is going on, the familiar scene of "Hey buddy, got a match?" has just been acted out. Two things make this different from any ord inary street scene. The voices are speaking Russian, and you have just witnessed the sale of an illegal jazz record. Bootleg Jazz Strange ?-Yes. Voice of America Is Source These records are taken from jazz programs beamed through the Iron Curtain by the Voice of America, and more and more cats behind the big screen- are risking poltical repercussions by 4igging these capitalistic sound's. Even more violent is the dom munist reaction to rock 'n roll, Elvis Presley, presently in the employ of said warmongers, is the chief offender. Music Still Powerful Despite Russian efforts to the contrary, people are still risking their necks to obtain American jazz records. Swedish jazz - rated tops round the world-is smuggled in through Finland, and these albums with their excellent quality command fabulous sums. This story was told to me by an Army captain who had been assigned to the Camp Kilmer, N. J., Location Center, which han dled-most of the Hungarians and the few Russians who came to America after the Hungarian Re volt. "Dave," he said, "though it may sound corny, I really kind of ap preciate my record stack (he has about 80 top albums) more after hearing about that.'.I don't know about you, but I kind of feel that way, too. kRGESt IN THE SOUTHEAST" JAL WEAR FOR MEN rden St. Phone AL 3-0461 MBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA IUST A MOMENT, I IF YOUR PAPERS we can determine, it is true the men.
