SPE Win iral Play . this week to play the game which would determine the Fraternity Divisional champions. The PiKA-Sigma Chi proved to be quite a crowd-thriller, with hot and heavy action from start to finish. Sigma Chi came from behind to lead at the half 24-21, largely due to the efforts of center Eddie Beall who proved to be quite a "tap-in artist," tapping in eight out of 10 shots in the first half. From this point the two teams fairly matched each other point for point. In the fourth quarter, PiKA's Ken Rosefield tied the game with two minutes left to play, 36-36. Regular play ended with the score tied. In the first overtime, Beall scored to make it 38-36, and Rose field tallied for PiKA to end the period tied 38-38. The second over time saw neither team score, and the game remained a tie, going into "sudden death," that is the winner being the first team to score. It took three different tip-offs before the ball went into play and after the ball had swapped hands twice, PiKA took the ball down court and Alex Hawkins pitched r in the winning basket to win the game, 40-38. The SPE-Phi Kap game, while not quite so much a thriller, did see plenty of action. Fast offen sive was the keynote of play in the first half, led by Connely and O'Donnell for SPE and Weeks for Phi Kap, with the half ending with SPE ahead 24-14. 1 In the third and fourth periods, - SPE began to pile up points, due f largely to the fine rebounding of e center Joe Gomes. The game - ended with Sigma Phi Epsilon ahead 48-27. ield of Mat re advanced, far Development ani propulsion sys- proved high-tempel degree on the of the challenges fai improved mate- lurgist.. TASTE STEAD WNTL YOU 1MOtM W STE Sat'day Nite Fish Fry The other day, my friend and I were returning from a trek down the river. Gruff camp chatter attracted us toward a lanling where smoke floated over an ever-darkening river. We sur prised four friendly chaps greas ing the skillet. We didn't leave right then. From the deep, oblong pan, the cooked rock fish (or whatever) were retrieved. Of course, there were fillets to spare. We stuck as close as barnacles they had to give us a fish apiece to leave. We gobbled them then and there. Needless to say, the chow was succulent, as you sus pected it might be. We went on back to the house. We were joined soon afterward by two other cohorts from town who also yearned for the tasty (free) grub. .By this time, new sounds were piercing the dusk from the direction of the river. "Let him go, M The moon was just coming out to watch us sneak back to the camp along the bank. Some mandlin strains that sounded like "WHEN MY BLUUU MOON TURNS TO GOLD AGINNN" began to seep over the hillock as we approached. The glimmer of their lightwood oak fire saw us seated over the rise. The fish fry had now reached the singing point. Our fishermen were lounging around the crackling fire drinking clear water from a two-quart ball jar and crooning like crazy. When they finished, the one with the guitar broke the spell. "Wish muh brother wuz here. le can't play a gittar but he shore can sing, man. Jis give him one or twvo drinks to kinda clear his VAYS~ L IROSLED AKS throat. . . . This discourse trailed off into some high caliber spirituals that ended a few minutes later. The man with the guitar continued as master of ceremonies-a elown if ever I saw one. "If you'd a-heard me an' muh brother singing and ya ain't seed us, you'd a-sweared we wuz Bill Monroe an' th' Blue Grass Boys." lie slowed up for just a bite of bass (or whatever) and a swig. "When I left th' house with my gittar, my wife-ghe's th' kinda woman what always suspicions I'm going out with some wimmin -anyhow, I tole her that th' boys asted me to go an' sing fur 'um after we bin fishing. So I got to bring home one fish tuh show 'er." The two-quart jar glistened on the upswing as someone tilted it "way" back for a big slug. Gittar Slim used this moment to prod the fire and the conversation. No tek. It's a Gar." body seemed to be in much of a mood to object yet. "Now, I can drink that straight whiskey on down, but I drank that corn one time an' it likened to pizzuned me. Why, if you wuz tuh set 90 quarts right here on the ground, I swan I wouldn't move nowhere to it." That did it. Somebody got restive and flung the burning timbers up in the air with a real war whoop that sent the whole tribe cavorting around the fire. One pointed into the oak over their heads, shouting at the branches, "Cit down from there if ya don't, I won't bring ya no The horseplay that followed was such a comedy' that all of us nearly choked to quiell the chiue kles. Ilut leave them to their harmless riot. We picked up our swollen sides and stumbled away. I guess that the jugs were tipped up again for as we sl i ped homne wvard, they went into anc inspeiri ng chorus of "Muih I ucket 's Cot a Hole lIn It." Free Something for nothing.
