SP6RTSI 4?ANDERS BY SANDERS i r THERE'S STILL LIFE u t So you're holding your head down this week because Clemson beat the Gamecocks in the "Big Thursday" affair. b Well, you should because the loss was just as much your fault as it was those 46 players on the field along with Coach a Warren Giese. t Why do I say that? Well, I'll tell you .. . you lost that ball game when Clemson's Harvey White completed that b pass simply because you lost your desire to win. I'm not b talking to the players, but to you STUDENTS. After Clem- b son had scored, everyone got as quiet as a mouse. There f wasn't a squeak anywhere around the stadium from Carolina u fans. It takes a helluva lot more to win a ball game than the players on the field. It takes yelling from the stu- K dents! Could you please tell me why you stopped yelling? S Last year we had that spirit of '56 that carried the team a to victories, but that spirit and desire of the students b to win is not there. I'm gonna stop right here and congratulate the Clemson r cheering section for their helping to push the Tigers to - victory. IT'S ALL UP TO YOU Now let's get to the business at hand. Tonight at 6:30, d the band of Pat Garnett will move onto the horseshoe in front of President Russell's home to kick off the homecoming t pep rally. After that, they will proceed near most of the dorms with the anticipation of getting a few students away from their rooms. Please for gosh sakes, come to the pep rally on Davis Field. Members of the Pep Club, of which Bill Smith is president, visited Coach Giese .the other day, and he asserted he would cooperate in any way possible for the rally to be a success. However, he said neither he nor his team would put in an appearance at the pep rally if the thing was a flop. Giese is a firm believer in the fact that the students have as much a part in the winning of a football game as the players themselves. Those players get out there every day for two or three hours' running through the various offensive and defensive plays and you STUDENTS can't support your team for a couple of hours. Keep your heads low until you have decided to cheer for the Gamecocks. t A SEVERED TRADITION L Last Wednesday night before the classic, the few stu- a dents who went to the pep rally had a tradition snatched 'from under their feet. For only heaven knows how long, d the students at the University of South Carolina have been a having their annual processional to the Capitol grounds to i, burn that damn Tiger. But, before the pep rally began, g members of the Pep Club learned they could not burn the t Tiger and this infuriated everyone.
