Small Staff
Virginia's head football coacl
Ben Martin, not only has a youn
corps of assistants, but also ti
smallest staff in the Atlant
Coast Conference.
The former Navy aide, who toe

has three regular coaching assis

mer Cavalier stars who performc
for ex-head coach Art Guepe. TI
oldest man on the staff is E. I
(Butch) Slaughter, erstwhi
Michigan great who has served t
a coach and professor of physic,
education here for 26 years.
However, Slaughter becomes tl
"opposition" once the sease
starts, devoting most of his tin
to scouting the enemy.
The trio which must carry mo!
of the assistant's load are Harr
son (Chief) Nesbit, Tom Berr
and Joe Palumbo.
Nesbit, who was promoted froi
freshman coach to varsity lir
coach this year, and assistant lir
coach Palumbo are both formc
guards who entered Virginia aftc
starring at Greenbrier Militar
School. Neshit won four varsit
letters from 1947-50, put in on
year as an assistant at the Un
versity of Chattanooga and w
held freshman coach four season
Palumbo, a native Pennsylvai
ian, is rated one of the finest lin<
men to ever perform for the Cavt
Hers. He achieved All-America
honors in 1951 when he captaine
the Cavaliers through an 8-1 set
son. During his three years vai
sity tenure Virginia fashioned a
enviable 23-5 record.
Berry, who like Neshit is a nt
tive of Lynchburg, was a lettei
winning fullback in his first vai
sity season (1950). lie became
regular defensive halfback the fo
lowing year. After two years wit
the Marines he returned for hi
final football campaign in 1954.
Last year he served as parl
time assistant while attendin
graduate school. He became a ful
time backfield coach this fall, an
devotes most of his time to drillin
Cavalier backs on defense.

The Carolina Pep Club will hold
its intial pep rally of the year at

"Wade" is USC's brand new

ray has becn pushing his boys
through rough drills in an effort
to retain some of the pre-season
laurels which many predictors
have forecast for the Blue Devils.
Duke Gets Nod
IDuke has gotten the pre-season
nod from the cnCerence sports
writers as the top team and the
main reason for the confidence in
I)Duke is the wealth of tried and
experienced players on the team.
The main cogs in the Duke ma
chine are expected to be Hal Mc
I haney, who was voted the num
her one blocker in the conference
last season, Roy ltord, the Ali
A merica nominee for the guard
slot, Buddy Stanley and Tom Top
ping, both of whom have had suf
ficient experience in the line.
Apparently the only certain
thing about the game at the pres
ent time is that it will be rough,
tough and low-scoring. New York
hookmakers are giving South Car
olina and anywhere from three to
ten points, but some think the
game can go in Carolina's favor
.iust as easily as wvinter follows

'hThree halfbacks tmtt - often

and King Dixon and Duke's sen

Giant John (Killer) Kompara,
the man the Gamecocks feel the
nost likely candidate for All

experienced but gulIy line against
Duke's great guard Roy fiord,
picked on numerous pre-season
All-Am uerica teams, and a weighty
Duke forward w.ll.
1l1ue Devil Hal MeElhaney,

prominent ly mintioned for all-star
honors.
Other Dike c"elebrities include
Tom 'l'opping, :a tackle, and Bill

The Blue Devils are favored
from three to 14 points over the
Ganecocks but the point-spread
for a l)tke victory was even more
l:tst year when USC pulled a 7-0
tpset. to throw the ACC race into
a cocked hat..
One of the big problems of both
tem:tis is the replacement of their
fine quarterbacks of last year.
Duke lost its Sonny Jurgensen
along with six starters from the
first-team line.
South Carolina will miss the
cricket calling of Mackie Prickett,
whom Giese praised as having per
fornted alntost flawlessly last sea
son. Hesides l'rickett, the Birds
:tre replacing four men in the
first-unit, line.
