SPORTSjk gANDERS BY SANDERS FIRST OUTLOOK To those new students who are entering the University for the first time, we of the Gamecock sports staff welcome you, and those who are returning for another year of studies, sports attractions, etc., we hope you will enjoy this year even more than those gone by. In all probability most of the Gamecock fans have already learned of the pre-season outlook for the Gamecocks, but in case you haven't, here is a short resume. In a press conference held on opening day of football practice, Coach Warren Giese, the young leader in football circles said that the team would actually be less experienced than the team which moved to a 7-3 season last year. But, Giese continued by saying that the team this year actually has more potential than did the group last year, but the other seven teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference have also increased in strength and depth. The one place where Giese is supposedly lacking strength is the second unit. He told the newsmen that actually the second string line had less than 30 minutes of varsity ex perience. And, that is where Giese maintains is the drop in experience. PLAYERS IN GOOD SHAPE Some 75 boys reported for the initial drills at the Round House on September 1, and all arrived in good physical shape, which speaks well for the entire team. It shows that the fine spirit and morale which the squad had last year has not decreased, and in most cases, is the difference between victory and defeat. Giese said that after compiling statistics during the summer, the coaching staff learned that the first unit played about 73 per cent of all the games last year, and the second team played about 27 per cent of the time. Giese said, "that first team must have been in terrific shape." CONFERENCE OUTLOOK Well, if there is a conference favorite, all the scribes are picking Duke to reign as ACC champion. According to most reports, the Blue Devils have a wealth of experienced ma terial, especially in the backfield. South Carolina, however, is rated as the team which might be the thorn in Duke's side, much in the same manner as last season when the Gamecocks upset Duke 7-0 at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks are rated sec ond in the conference by most writers, with Clemson third, and North Carolina fourth. The ACC probably has more balance this year than at any time since the conference was formed in 1!95a, and for the first time in history, all A('(' members with one excep tion will play each other. Virginia and N. C. State could not get together on a date. FROM ATOP THE FENCE. The young Atlantic Coast Conference had five new coaches in 1956-no changes whatsoever this season,... Mike Caskey was namedl head football coach at Boiling Springs High School*during the summer. Most of y'ou will remember the fine running of Mike along with C'arl Brazel a couple of seasons ago. . . . When the game' is begun next Saturday night, a new change will have taken pilace at Carolina Stadium. A giant step wa taken during thc summer months when the Board of Trustees approved the measure to award the contract for' thet con1struc(t ion of 8,00( adlditional seats in the Stadium. This will increase th(' seat ing capacity to 42,000, and should the stand(s be comnpleted] prior to the D)uke game, a new recordl will be set in South Carolina for people attending a football game. Quite a' tribute to a great University. SPIlR1T OF '57 (CON'T.) Last year the spirit of the entire student bo(dy was wondlerful andl I, personally, believe that t he support whicli the studlents gave the Gamecocks was one of the ma.iot factors for such a successful football and basket lball s(eason So, once again let's get behind the Pep C'lubi, t he c'he(erleadlers the band, and of course, the Gamecocks anid their staff of hard-working coaches. Below is the University Fight Song, which I feel al the old studlents already know and hope the new studentflt will learn before the D)uke game. He began playing for the fighting Irish in 1922 and eventually be name one of Rockne's greatest fullbacks. Duke Ticket Sale Indicate Sellout Crowd The game between South Caro lina's Gamecocks and Duke's Blue Devils, September 21, stands to hecome the best attended athletic contest in the state's history. No opening game ever has had so much appeal in Columbia. Up in Durham, the Blue Devils are calling it a "revenge" game, the one to get even with the Game cocks for that 7-0 defeat last year that cost Duke an Orange Bowl trip. Duke fans are buying tickets at a rate of eight times greater than for any other USC-Duke game. In Columbia, fans are gunning for another upset and an introduc tion of their team to really big time football. Carolina stadium is being en larged to seat 42,000. There's a good chance that stands will be completed in time for the opener. IIeretofore, the only sellouts were to the annual Big Thursday affair with Clemson. While Duke has always drawn good crowds here, the contest has never even threatened a sellout until now. The game with Navy in 1955 was heiading for a full house when rain c:ale to spoil the fun. USC ticket sales director, Dick .\ nderson, says that at least one in five of the Gamecock Club, the University's booster organization, who have ordered extra Clemson tickets are asking for extra Duke tickets. It's the first time this has happened. As a result of this and extra heavy sales to alumni, all seats in the East and West stands have Ieel taken. A good hunk of the South stand has been sold. Males iigh t ordiiari ly have been 4till higher at this point except that some fan s, feeling there will he no seat intg prolems nowv that xtria seats are heing built, are o t hur rying to the ticket of fice. i ckl~et s have .juist gone on sale to t genertaI publ ic. In 1955 when the headaches of the combined athletic director football coach began to tell, En right decided to retire from active coaching and become USC ath letic director. And, success has followed him in this post, too. Under new head coach, Warren Giese, the Gamecocks ended the season with a 7-3 season including an upset win over Duke. The Garnet and Black really surprised many of the nation's top football prognosticators. And, the ole crystal ball says Enright is going to enjoy many more successful seasons.
