The frosh from Carolina will travel to Chapel Hill to meet the Baby Tarheels on April 18. On April 19, the team will meet the Richmond Academy squad in Au gusta, Ga. and on April 27, the Cubs from Clemson will visit the Carolina track. Coach Shipley has narrowed his team so as not to have more than two players at each position with the exception of his mound staff. At first base "Ship" is counting on Skinny Young and Frank Just to carry the load. These two will have to battle it out for this spot as neither one of them is a return ing player from last year. In a scrimmage game early in the week, Just looked very good as one of his long pokes drove in a run. Young has not had a sufficient chance as of yet due to his stint on the basketball team. Now that Young can settle down to business on the diamond the competition for this position will be keen. At second base it will be a wide open battle between Howie Dare and Bob Kiatta. Last year Howie proved to be a good outfielder, but now he wants to try his hand at second base. Howie has quick reflexes which make him a poten tially good second sacker. On the other hand Kiatta is a proven player at second base and will be trying to hold his own against the aggressive Dare. Kiatta is now playing the position without much interference from Howie. This is due to the fact Dare is working out with the football team during this spring session. As soon as Coach Mont is satisfied with Dare's perform ance he will release Dare to play baseball. Andy McDonald is the rugged veteran of last years campaign who is putting up a strong de fense to hold on to his position. Early in the week. Andy had two RBIs to lead the varsity 3-1 over the freshman squad. The newcomer to the squad is a local boy, Bill Black. Bill is a graduate of Northwestern High School where he was a top notch third sacker. He will be good competition for Andy at third. If he doesn't gain the number one assignment he will be a good man to have on the bench to give you that extra depth that is so impor tant. Last year Bolen was ham pered by a sore shoulder but so far this season has shown no signs of having any trouble. Iloth Maxwell and Bolen are long ball hitters, and if by chance the fence goes up around Shipley Field both of these men should see plenty of action. The outfield situation looks fairly well in hand with four top flight outfielders trying to gain one of the three positions. The players in question are Jack John son, Jack Doane, Dutch Rosen busch. and Eric Hintze. Johnson and Doane are both experienced contenders for the outfield vacancies. These two men along with Rosenbusch saw plenty of action last spring in the pastures of Shipley Field. Dutch is not quite as experienced as the other two mentioned. The fourth member of the out field is Eric Hintze. This ex service man is back at Terpville once again, after a hitch with Uncle Sam. Before the Army Eric played baseball and boxed here at the university. Now ready to go again, Hintze has been belting the horseside all over the field. It looks as though it will be a hard decision to make as to who sits out the opening game. In receiving department there is also close contention for the starting berth. The top men for this position are Roy Beauchaump, Charles Wright, and Bernie Garner. Beauchaump is the only oe of the trio returning from last year's squad. But it doesn't appear that Roy has a lock on his position for this season. Both Wright and Garner have been turning in some excellent per formncs 1%YS' L BROSIE AKSI Page Seven Today Opener For Both Clubs Carolina's Gamecocks will inau gurate their 1957 baseball cam paign this afternoon as they play host to the Maryland Terps at the Veterans Hospital Field at 3 p.m. Coach Joe Grugan was un decided en his choice of pitching assignments for the important Atlantic Coast Conference en counter as the Gamecock went to press last Tuesday. However, the nod will probably go to either Leon Norton, a southpaw. or Jim Craig. The remaining positions will probably be filled by Ward Fisher, catcher; Ken Rosefield, first base; Larry Jewell, second base; Pete Stokes, shortstop; Jimmy Rawls, third base; Bobby Bridges, left field; Ronnie Coker, center field; and Dave Ketchem, right field. The squad elected Larry Jewell team captain while at Parris Is land for exhibition games with the Marines and Springfield College. Jewell was a member of the All ACC second team last spring.
