Wallace, according to ACC Serv ice Bureau figures through games of last Saturday night, is averag ing 30.5 points and 14.7 rebounds a game. Len Rosenbluth of North Carolina is well hack in scoring average at 26.4 points a game, and North Carolina State's John Richter is considerably in the rear in rebounding with 11.8 recoveries a game. But in the deyartmient of free throw shooting, there are three players in the running and sepa rated by the narrowvest of margins. Jackie Murdock of Wake Forest, national leader as well last week, is No. 1 with an accuracy mark of 87.74 per cent (136 for 155). But second is Bob Seitz of North Caro lina State at 87.62 per cent (92 for 105); and third is Ernie Wiggins of Wake Forest at 86.73 per cent (85 for 93). This race is so close that a single miss at a critical stage could mean a title won or lost. Field goal shooting competition is also close with Richter on top with 51.9 per cent on 123 field goals in 237 shots. Perry Moore of Maryland is second at even 50 per cent, but with only 61 field goals at present he may not reach the 100 required for season honor contention. Seitz and Ed Brinkley of Clemson are next at 48.4 per cent and 48 per cent, respectively. University of South Carolina has a 6'2", 185-pound dolciume playing guard for the Gamecock basketball team. Raymond (Cookie) Pericola, the 19-year-old sophomore, has in one year on the varsity and one on the frosh team, brought from Union City, New Jersey, an exciting, crowd -pleasing brand of basket ball. Outside of the phenomenal scor ing of Grady Wallace, the fans pack the Carolina Field House to see "Cookie" pull the supports off the opposing team with his amazing ball handling and drib bling. Nicknamed By Aunt Pericola, who was fondly nick named "Cookie" by an aunt when "I was very, very young," has been one of coach Frank John son's steadiest Gamecocks during the current season. Always the crowd pleaser with his unaffected, almost nonchalant, style of per formance, Cookie has constantly scored in the double columns in every game. From his play-maker position, Pericola sets up the offense for the team. He has, on numerous occasions, helped Wallace get shots away at the basket. When the opposing teams doubleteam Wal lace, Cookie keeps the opponent loose with driving, twisting lay ups. Pericola and his teammate, Dick Hoffman hail from the same neighborhood in Union City. They have been playing basketball to gether since grade school days. They carried their Union Hill High School basketball team to an un defeated (27-0) season in their senior year. This team won the city, county, and state basketball championships. ACC Rugged When asked what 'he thought of the Atlantic Coast Conference style of basketball, "Cookie" res ponded, 'Well, there are no poor teams, like. On any given night if a team is right it is capable of beating the league leaders." This is right but no team has been able to knock off the boys from Chapel Hill, " . . . yeah, those guys are tough." Pericola rates (Continued on page 7) late King George Vi, Yardley & Co., Ltd.. The preliminary heats will be held Friday and the finals will be Saturday. Quartet Betters Record Storm Bailey, Dave Rembert, Arthur Gaston and Don Bigby shaved two seconds off the school record in the 400-yard relay to give the tankmen a victory over Davidson. With only one event remaining the team was leading by three points. The winner of the 400-yard relay would be the winner of the meet. This set the stage for the record-breaking relay. Bailey was the first man and he ended his 100 yards with a three-yard lead. Dave Rembert increased it to five and Gaston held his own. Don Bigby staved off a terrific effort by the last Davidson man and won by inches. The time was 3:51.9. State Meet In the state meet, Wes Millard broke his own record for the 220 and 440-yard freestyles. The Cita del relay teams set new marks.
