Gamecocks lii SPORTS DIGEST .. By MAC HILL.. Deadlines and Basketball Don't Mix .. . Those Gamecocks just beat Furman! We were there ! Now we're faced with a deadline . . . what shall we do . . ? we shall say a few words about these same Gamecocks. The tempo in activity, at least sportswise, around Carolina has picked up considerably during the past week. Some of our athletic teams are going down the home stretch in their respective sports and others are preping for their approaching seasons. To focus on basketball, USC's paramount sporting interest at the moment, our Gamecocks cagers are currently holding a 13-9 won-loss record and their cap tain, Grady Wallace, is leading the entire country in scoring with a 30.409 per game average. In conference play, the locals have garnered a 4-7 slate and with but three league games remaining they are almost assured of a sixth place seeding in the ACC tournament at Raleigh, March 7, 8 and 9. The parings for the ACC tourney are, one vs. eight, and four vs. five in the top bracket, two vs. seven, and three vs. six in the lower bracket. It will be most advantageous for the Gamecocks to finish in sixth place for that will pit them against the number three team in the tournament's first round and if they should win they will meet the winner of the second team-seventh team game. The only position already "in the bag" is number one which North Carolina cannot lose. At the present time four teams, Maryland, Duke, Wake Forest and N. C. State are still in the running for the second place position. Should Maryland finish in second place, then three of the "Big Four" (UNC, State, Wake Forest and Duke) will be pitted in the upper bracket. Coach Jimmy Ratcliff's tankers will engage in a triangular meet at the natatorium tomorrow afternoon in what will amount to a state swimming meet. Clemson and The Citadel are the other teams entered in the event. Coach Ratcliff will take his squad up to Chapel Hill next Thursday for the three-day ACC swimming meet. The tankers have a somewhat dismal record with only one victory in nine outings. However, Winter Kimes in diving and 71 Storm Bailey, Arthur Gaston, David Rembert and Don Bigby in the 400-yard relay have been fairly consistent winners through out the season. Coach Weems Baskin will send his cindermen to Chapel Hill tomorrow for the ACC indoor track meet. They open their regular season March 20 when Presby terian will invade the cinder paths behind the "Round House." Baseball, tennis and golf, the remaining Spring sports, will also get under way within the next week or two. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Bob Thompson, sports editor of the "Furman Hornet," was looking ahead to the '58-'59 basketball season tuther day and was quite happy with visions of a FU starting line-up of then seniors Dick Wright, Steve Ross, Steve Benya (all members of this year's team), Edd Selvy (recent transfer) and then junior Byron Pinson, plus North Greenvivlle's hotshot Pete Carlisle (if they can get him). "Just picture a starting unit of Wright, Pinson, Selvy, Ross and Carlisle, all at their peak," boasted Thompson. SHate to spoil his dream, but what about a Gamecock team composed of Pericola, Hoffman, Lentz, Goodroe, Franz, Prater, Callihan, W. Hudson and B. Hudson! At his present pace, Grady Wallace will break at least one national record formerly held by Frank Selvy and then D)arrell Floyd. He bids fair toward scoring the most points in his first two years with a major college team. Wallace, a transfer student, will not be eligible after this year. 'Wallace can easily become the fifth basketball player in history to have averaged better than 25 points per game for a career. Only Frank Selvy, Buzz Wilkinson, Bob Pettit and Darrell Floyd have done it before him. USC is now averaging 81.5 points a game, North Carolina 80.6. Maryland's deliberate Terps, the Atlantic Coast Conference's most improved team since semester examinations, have regained their perennial place of honor in the Atlantic Coast Conference - top run in dlefense. After trailing Wake Forest for nearly the entire season, Mary land took over the defensive lead after last Saturday night's games, wvhich found Wake beaten 75-64 by Duke while the Terps downed N. C. State 56-49. According to ACC games of last Saturday night, Maryland's average yield is 60.3 points a game as compared to the Deacons' 62. The top-ranked Tar Heels, (despite the fact that they have won their last four games by an average of only 4.5 points, still boast an average over 20 victims of 14.7 p)oints a game. This does not include Tuesday's game with N. C. State. North Carolina also claims the biggest average rebound margin over opposition, a decisive 12.8 a game. But USC tops team re S INC.
