However, in addition to all the paperwork involved in coaching, one must have the playere. And, players the coaches will have Monday afternoon at the Athletic Center. That is the day spring football practice is scheduled to begin. When the football season opens, the Gamecocks will be out to bet ter their 1956 record of seven wins and three losses. In order to do this, the Birds are going to have to down such up and coming teams as Texas, Duke, Maryland, and North Carolina State. But, the situation this spr.ing will be a little different from that which occurred last year about this time. At that time, Coach Giese was in the midst of rounding up suit able coaches to fill his staff, and making an attempt to recruit pros pective players for Carolina. The recruiting of coaches and players was completed and spring prac tice was held, but reports from all corners gave the Gamecocks a chance to win only about two or three game.s in 1956. How wrong they were. So, now in 1957, Carolina has the athletic program in good wvorking order and everything is all set. What will the p re-season forecasters say about the '57 Garnet and Black team? Time will tell! Everyone will admit that the Birds will be better equipped to meet the challenges of the ACC this fall as they have a number of returning men to the fold, along with outstanding rising sopho mores. Also, one will have to include Jimmy Duncan and Weems Bas kin as hot contestants for the post. At tackle, Carolina has lost Sam DeLuca, the fine 225-pound tackle from Brooklyn, N. Y., and Tony Byers. John Kompara seems to be the man to beat for one of the po sitions, while Don Rogers, who played second team tackle behind Byers last year, will have strong competition from Alex Lazzarino, the 6-1, 235-pound transfer from Wyoming, who has already been drafted by the pro's. Others com peting for positions are Bill Jerry, a bohunk, and Ed Pitts, Kirk Phares and others from the fresh man squad. At the guzard slot, Corky Gaines and Nelson Weston appear to be in line for starting assignments. Jimmy Merck and bohunk Jack Ashton, along with several out standing freshmen, are also in the running. In the middle of the line, Caro O R ADI f 'ff lt d se d it n Monday lina will have Lawton Rogers re turning for more duty in 1957. Tony Galenious will also be fight ing hard for a starting position. And, Carolina's bright star in the sky, the backfield, looks very promising. Returning for duty this year will be juniors Alex Hawkins and King Dixon at the halfback slots, either Don John son or Bobby Barrett at fullback, and a big scramble for the quar terback post. Others competing for honors in the backfield are Frank Destino, Jesse Smarr, John Dorsett, Hey ward King, Bunky Shore, Dan South, and a host of rising soph omores, including fullback John Saunders. Mackie Prickett will be gone from the signal-caller's position, and the mad scramble will be among several outstanding field generals. Among these are Sam Vickers, Bobby Bunch, Stan Spears, Steve Satterfield and Larry Bennett. So, the outcome of the 1957 sea son will not be known until the final whistle is blown on or about November 30 when the Gamecocks meet Wake Forest in the season finale.
