USC DEFENSE TOP Total Of In '56; WI A total of 30 Atlantic Coast Conference football records were broken or equalled during the 1956 season, and Wake Forest's full back Bill Barnes was the chief contributor to this attack on the record books. Barnes, according to ACC Serv ice Bureau record reviews re leased recently, was responsible for four of the 25 new marks written into the books, and the Deacon ace, a five-way statistics champion for the '56 season, also tied a fifth. Busy Bill His new records include most yards gained rushing during a single season, 1,010; most yards gained rushing and passing dur ing a single season, 1,010; most average yards gained per game over a single season, 101, and most points scored in a single game, 20 against William and Mary. Barnes and North Caro lina's Ed Sutton also tied the ACC record for most touchdowns in a single game, three. Closest approach to Barnes' one-man attack was made by Vir ginia fullback Jim Bakhtiar, the "Plunging Persian," who set rec ords for most net yards gained in a single game, 201, vs. Virginia Military Institute; most rushes in a single game, 29, vs. Wake For est; and most rushes in~ a single season, 203. Sutton, Duke's Bernie Blaney' and Maryland's Dickie Lewis each figured in a pair of record per formances. Sutton set a new mark for most kickoffs returned in a single sea son, 14 in addition to tying the single-game TD mark. Blaney set new records for the longest scoring kickoff return, 97 yards vs. Pitt; and for the best Joe Grugan N Coach Succeei Joe Grugan, a member of South Carolina's "pony backfield" of 1939 and 1940 and one of the school's all-time top baseball play era, was today named head bane ball coach of the Gamecocks. Grugan succeeds Ted Petoskey, wvho resigned last summer. Ath letic Director Rex Enright, who made the announcement, said the duties would be effective imme diately. A native of Philadelphia, Gru gan was recruited by Don McCal liater in his last year as head football coach at the University. He then played three years of varsity football under new coach, Rex Enright. With Harry Blouin, Kirk Nor ton and Billy Lowry, Grugan rounded out what newsmen liked to call Carolina's "pony" backs. As a pitcher on Petoskey's base ball squad, Grugan had a 9-2 vic tory record, an all-time school mark. He was "cleanup" man in the batting order and hit .488 in his senior year. He refused their offer to start him in Class D ball and returned to South Carolina to accept a pitching job with Flor ence of the Palmetto League. A fter a year there, he went into the service and played outfield for an Army Air Corps team at Way cross, Ga., because an arm injury had prevented his pitching activi ties. Discharged in 1946, he returned to the University as a physical education instructor for the Navy's V-12 program. In Septem ber of that same year he was added to the USC faculty where he became intramural director. While playing with a local sand lot team, Grugan discovered that his arm had returned to near normal, and in the late summer of 1948 he joined Gee Walker's Columbia Reds where he pitched the remainder of the season and the first part of the next season in the Class A, South Atlantic League. He later pitched for Camden and Orangeburg in the Palmetto League, and ended his playing career with Greenwood in the Class B, Tri-State Lague. ake ForeJ meter TA FTM POT. RBs Avg. PF Pts. He is tops in most points scored in, a game (54 against Georgia), most field goals scored in a game (20 against Georgia), best scoring average in - a season (23.9 in 1956), a mark he seems to be set ting all over again, and best scor ing average in a career.
